THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Former president Lee Myung-bak appears before prosecution

Former South Korean leader Lee Myung-bak offered an apology to the people as he appeared for prosecution questioning over corruption allegations that include bribery and abuse of power.

The fifth former South Korean president who will face a prosecution investigation stood before local and foreign reporters. He told reporters "I am deeply sorry for causing concern to the public at a time when our economy is struggling and regional security is at stake."

Lee, who was president from 2009 to 2013, is suspected of taking a total of 10.3 million dollars in bribes from the National Intelligence Service as well as Samsung and others, including from a former chief of a major banking group, around the time of his election win and in the early years of his term in office. He also face suspicions that he was involved in huge illegal funds made through auto parts maker DAS.

Prosecutors believe Lee abused his presidential power and ordered his office and foreign ministry to help the auto parts company recover the money. He has denied all accusations, denouncing the investigation as political retaliation by the current administration of liberal President Moon Jae-in.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Moon says fate of Korean Peninsula on his summits

South Korean leader Moon Jae-in is asked the nation's support for the successful arrangements of the historic summits ahead while his key officials met regional powers in China and Japan.

With the two Koreas' decision to hold a historic summit in late April and the US President Donald Trump's decision to accept talks with Kim Jong Un this May, President Moon remains extra cautious in taking the process forward.

While he pleaded for support for the success of the upcoming talks overseas, his key officials started carrying out President Moon's efforts to bring regional powers on board.

In Beijing, President Moon's National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong sat down with Chinese President Xi Jinping for 35 minutes on Monday as another delegation headed to Tokyo to brief Japanese officials on the attempts to open talks with Pyongyang on its nuclear and missile program.

The Chinese leader told South Korean official that China is "on the same page" with Seoul and that he hopes for a smooth inter-Korean summit while giving credit to the South for great progress in getting North Korea and the US to agree to dialogue.

In Tokyo, South Korea's National Intelligence Service chief Suh Hoon met with the Japanese Foreign minister. Taro Konno said Japan would work closely with Seoul and Washington calling the situation a near "miracle." Chung will travel from Beijing to Moscow later this week to speak to Russian officials.

Suh is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga before returning to Seoul on Tuesday.

THREATS FROM NORTH KOREA: Trump says North Korea talks could fail or bring ‘greatest deal’

Last weekend, US President Donald Trump said that his planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un could fail or result in “the greatest deal for the world” to ease nuclear tensions between the two countries.

“I may leave fast” if progress does not seem possible, Trump said at a campaign rally for Republican congressional candidate Rick Saccone in western Pennsylvania. Trump said he believes North Korea wants to make peace and that, “I think it’s time.”

A time and place to meet has not yet been set, although the meeting is supposed to happen by the end of May.

“Who knows what’s going to happen?” said Trump, who added that if the meeting takes place, “I may leave fast or we may sit down and make the greatest deal for the world.”

Trump made the shocking decision on Thursday to meet with Kim after the North Korean leader’s invitation was relayed by a South Korean delegation who visited the White House. The move abruptly reversed decades of U.S. policy aimed at preventing North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

Earlier in Washington, Trump sought to rally international support for a potential summit, saying North Korea had agreed to not conduct another missile test until after proposed meetings had taken place.
