Chevrolet Spark (M400, US Spec) and Second Generation Chevrolet Cruze

Two new Chevrolets are ringing the new year with a boom on the compact car markets in their classes. On the compact side, the Chevrolet Spark has been given a much mild-mannered regeneration while the Chevrolet Cruze, in the compact midsize sedan stakes, got fully regenerated for the new generation. So, what lies ahead of these two?

2016 Chevrolet Spark
2016 Chevrolet Spark interior

Of course, you might think you are already familiar with the new generation Chevrolet Spark because South Korea already has one last year and you are already familiar by how it looks because as told, the design looks not very premium-ish for the new model. That's just half of the story because apart from its rather unpleasant looks for a compact car, the inside is worth questionable because with technology continue to evolve, the rather cheap but comfortable interior doesn't come with a CD player and instead, it comes with a standard touchscreen with the Chevrolet MyLink that now comes with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. Apart from that, like all good Chevys, 4G LTE connectivity is standard as well. It's hard to think why things like these would evolve into something more smartphone-ish or maybe they're trying to adapt through the easy life just like us?

Here in the USA, the new Spark is powered by a bigger and more powerful 1.4L petrol engine mated with either a more enjoyable 5-speed manual gearbox or a more casual CVT. This engine produces 98P of power and 94lb-ft of torque, and whichever gearbox you're on, you can expect an EPA estimated fuel economy of 41MPG highway, which is rather impressive for a compact car of such size, although it remains irrelevant in American roads dominated by Focuses, Darts, and many others.

While this is a compact car for the city roads, it's not surprisingly half bad to handle although the compound crank rear suspensions doesn't feel as sophisticated as any European compacts do. It's ashamed why this new Spark is not offered in European roads, where in turn gets a more similar Vauxhall Viva or Opel Karl.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze
2016 Chevrolet Cruze interior

Okay, if the new Spark doesn't suit your taste as your first car if you recently got your driver's license, perhaps why not consider the all-new Chevrolet Cruze? Yep, the all-new model and while it doesn't look as pleasant as the previous model, at least it's not as dull as what the Chinese had. It's surprisingly bigger than the new model, more rakishly stylish, and more high-tech features than any other compact midsize saloons of its class, which really sets the competition apart.

On the inside, it still has the grim reality of having a touch-screen with added connectivity standard, meaning there is no place for your CD collection, which is very very sad why we are now living in the age where cars have irreplaceable radios, no place for CD players, and so on like what cassette players happened. Better get those CD content be ripped through your smartphone if you got enough space to do so.

Anyway, while this is basically an Opel/Vauxhall Astra K underneath, the new Chevrolet Cruze features handling similar to European compacts, making it a well-sophisticated compact saloon fit for daily uses. Under the hood, the new Cruze comes with a more peppy 1.4L turbo engine, which produces 153 horsepower and promises a EPA estimated fuel economy of 40MPG highway.

Should you buy either of those two? The new Spark starts at $12,660 while the new Cruze starts at $16,620, so whichever Chevy you choose, these new Chevys have features that will set the competition apart. Although some purists will never like the design of both of these cars, which some say it's deemed ugly, the premium amenities are what made these two compensated from their looks.

It's a shame that Europeans will miss out on those and they have to make do with their highly similar Opels or Vauxhalls, in the case of the Karl, Viva, and the Astra K.

GM Korea Chevrolet The Next Spark

South Korea is the first nation to get the new-generation Spark, which will arrive in the USA in early 2016 and soon in other markets (except Europe because of Chevrolet's pullout in the EU market), and since the latest-generation Spark is built by Koreans, for Koreans, these people are lucky enough to gain early access to "The Next Spark", which is a compact car emerged from being a low-life Daewoo Matiz to a world-proven Spark that captured the global audiences, even first-timers.

2016 GM Korea Chevrolet Spark

2016 GM Korea Chevrolet Spark

Here it is, the latest version, and it's yours for an affordable 10,150,000 KRW (estimated 8,700 US Dollars), which is a smart buy for those who got themselves a driver's license for the first time but what do you get for this uber-cheap city car? For starters, the design looks not very premium-ish for the new model. The previous-model looks fine when kitted out with extras but for the new model, the design looks unpleasant for the Chevrolet, especially with its signature dual-port grille that has gone on the wrong side of the road by putting the Chevy badge to the top of the grille rather than the middle that mosts Chevys do. What retains from the previous model is the secret rear doors which makes it more of an occasion for the new car.

Since this is the Korean-spec new Spark, the only engine available for Korean customers is a newly-developed 1.0 SGE ECOTEC engine mated with either a 5-speed manual or a Next Gen C-Tech CVT gearbox. This small engine develops 75PS of power output and 9.7kg-m of torque, which isn't sounds like much but in the small car like this, it feels peppy and perky. There's also an optional feature where it can shut off its engine at a set of lights, capable of delivering a combined fuel economy of 15.7km/L.

2016 GM Korea Chevrolet Spark interior

Thanks to its aerodynamic design and enhanced chassis, the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) has been improved, meaning that the new Spark delivers a best-in-class comfort unlike any other small cars in the market. This isn't half bad for a car suitable for first-time drivers but when it comes to your next barkada trip, you should better off with another car because even though it has seating enough room for your stuff and your mates, it's relatively small, meaning you can get bothered by people chit-chatting about what they saw on TV, what plans for the weekend, or any other blabbermouth your barkada might expect to ask.

What's also bizarre that this is the first-ever Chevy on sale to come with Apple Carplay which acts...just like your iPhone and that's it.

So, should you buy one? With the starting price of 10,150,000 KRW, yes, you can afford one but you have to spec it all out with some fancy stuff, including the CarPlay, to bring out the best to your city car, and since this car is ready to be sold in other markets soon, especially the Americas, this is one global car that deserves the credit of being a world-proven city car. Sadly, if you're European, you can't have one because of Chevrolet's pullout from the EU market but don't worry, the new Opel Karl/Vauxhall Viva compacts will supplant the Spark's EU demise. Look at this way, they're made in the same Korean factory, the same chassis, the same stuff, and the same behavior, despite their different appearances.

Available colors: Creamy Beige, Urban Titanium Grey, Blu-ray Blue, Carbon Flash Black, Blue Splash, Switchblade Silver, Mystic Violet, Fresh Lime Green, Solar Red, and Pure White

Chevrolet Spark (US-Spec)

Hmmm....we've already examined the Chevrolet Spark but however, the one we've examined was a Korean-spec one. The one we'll examine now is the USA-spec of the globally-acclaimed compact car that is now finally arrived where it belongs.

2013 Chevrolet Spark

Before explaining this, we found something at the internet about the Chevrolet Spark story and how does this mini Chevy became the darling of the yuppie generation. It started back in mid 2009 when the Chevrolet Spark was launched in South Korea (where it was previously called a Daewoo Matiz until 2011 where the Daewoo brand is gone for good). For Asians, they prefer Sparks which are colored Red, Beige, White, and Silver but for South Koreans, they like the pink color because its cute. In 2010, the Spark arrived in India as the new Beat and it was the most popular Chevy in India where it is the best selling vehicle in their lineup.

Well, let's move on to South America where their favorite colors are silver, black, and Cocktail Green. The Spark was mainly used for city driving and it served as a status symbol for up and corners. In Columbia, the Spark is the most popular Chevy ever sold.

Here in Europe, the Italians prefer the Chevy Spark more than anything else and this car was used for daily driving in Eastern and Western Europe. This car was introduced in 2010 as a replacement to the old Chevy Matiz.

Now, we blow our vuvuzelas to Africans, sorry, in which in South Africa, the Spark is most popular and it was used for daily driving in larger cities, especially Johannesburg, the country where comedians love to take a vacation. Last year, the Spark was launched in the African continent as the Spark M300 and the colors Red, Cocktail Green, and Atomic Blue are their picks.

On the upside down country, that is Australia, the Spark was available only in manual transmissions and it is one of the few markets where the Spark is driven from the right side of the vehicle.

In the war torn Middle East, the Spark represents almost 40% of all GM vehicle sales in Lebanon and the Arabs used them for city driving and for company fleet vehicles. Probably some Filipino workers in the Middle East drove one of these as work vehicles.

Source: http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2012/07/gm-infographic-tells-global-tale-of-new.html

Now the Spark has arrived in North America for the very first time and it is targeted towards young city dwellers. This car was reengineered to the United States to add technology and safety equipment as well as better ride and handling in city and highway driving. To differentiate the American Spark to the global Spark, it has a different front face, different rear lamps, brighter colors to mention later, a 15-inch 5-spoke Silver-painted wheel which comes standard and a 15-inch machined-face aluminum wheel with gray-painted pockets.

2013 Chevrolet Spark interior

The interior is a bit different from the global model and as you can see, the motorcycle-inspired dynamic meter cluster has been altered so now, it has a crisp, easy-to-read display. Sounds great and then there was 31.2 cubic feet of maximum cargo space or room for three passengers, makes it a perfect "barkada" car if you want to go out for some Los Angeles shopping trip. We bet that is and if you feel comfortable inside, it's like Karen Gillan firmly hugging the Adipose stuff toy for about an hour. Oh wait, sorry, that was a dreadful metaphor, she doesn't have the Adipose stuff toy. He he he.....Or maybe some gal with the Adipose stuff toy wanna use it as an accessory. Oops....

Speaking of the tortured metaphor I came up, there was this ECOTEC 1.2L DOHC 4-cylinder MFI engine that promises an EPA-estimated fuel consumption of about 38MPG, that's the same you'll get from the Fiat 500 but more than what you get from the Scion iQ! This engine though, it produces about 84HP of power it can be mated with a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission.

Oh wait, hang on. There's one more thing....You thought I forgot about this, don't you? The new Spark comes with Chevrolet MyLink allows you to initiate phone calls, hands-free, while on the go, enjoy music, Navigation, watch movies, and so on. MyLink may also provide you with this addicting touch screen, Bluetooth connectivity, USB connectivity, and pairing up your device. There, I said it. Happy now?

Anyway, Spark's available colors are Salsa Red, Jalapeno, Denim, Lemonade, Techno Pink, Summit White, Silver Ice, and Black Granite.

My comment:
So, the Spark's North American arrival may have been a bit too late for the party but for this one, this one gets even started. Don't be fool to such small size because this is one heck of a party crasher I would wanna have if I pass my driving test....just sketching....sorry.

Anyway, it does look identical to its big brother, the Sonic, and when you put them both, I might be surprised to see that this little fella has found himself a relative with a bowtie on it. Let's just say that bowties are cool and this little boy is the coolest, even cooler than the Scion iQ and the Fiat 500. I just wanna have one!

The World-Proven, now Forza-Proven, Spark

Chevrolet Spark in Switzerland

The Chevrolet Spark... If my memory serves me correctly, this compact Chevy built from Changwon, South Korea, is proven to be more popular worldwide not only by its sleek European design but also its fuel efficiency, performance, safety, and pricing that made this city car a smart buy. That car made it popular thanks to its appearance on Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers: Dark of the Moon as Autobots Skids and Mudflap.

Chevrolet Spark in Germany

The Chevrolet Spark is probably the best Forza 4 starter car I have ever chosen because once I got inside the Spark, you can't resist its affinity. Once you get used to this compact, you have a tendency to take full advantage of this starter car. Cars like the Vauxhall Agila, Peugeot 107, Citroen C1, or the Nissan March/Micra K13 are not probably my type because of its round shapes. Only the Chevrolet Spark impressed me when the first time I played this game.

Chevrolet Spark in France

The Spark is more than just racing in the hands of a world-class owner. This can can be modified through various uses on other races, and you can decorate the Chevy Spark as you like. It would be best to replicate Skids or Mudflap because this is ""Just For Fun". In addition, why not make some kind of Korean license plate using the "Create Vinyl Group" and when you're done, slap it on the Chevy Spark's back and they will say that this car's fresh from Korea. Of course, the Chevrolet Spark is made by Koreans for the world.

Chevrolet Spark in Italy

I'm sure that there is such thing as a Chevy Spark Owners Club somewhere in Forza 4 but in the meantime, let's enjoy the best of the world-proven Chevrolet Spark on Forza Motorsport 4, especially when you put it on the Top Gear Test Track for recreational purposes...

Chevrolet Spark presents Sparkada Trip

SPARKADA TRIP

The all new Chevrolet Spark is a good compact car, highly competitive against the likes of the Suzuki Celerio, Hyundai i10, or even the all new Kia Morning (Picanto). What makes it so special for the Chevrolet Spark is that it made appearances on Transformers Revenge of the Fallen and Transformers Dark of the Moon as Autobots Skids and Mudflap.

Now, Chevrolet (Philippine distributor: The Covenant Car Company Inc) collaborates with ABS-CBN (via their UHF channel, Studio 23) for a special two-part TV drama called "Sparkada Trip". First aired in August 14 (Sunday) after the UAAP basketball games on Studio 23, the special Sparkada Trip TV drama stars Xian Lim, Helga Krapf, Ketchup Eusebio, Charee Pineda, and Gee Canlas.

CAST:

Xian Lim as Alex, the school jock

Helga Krapf as Nora, Alex's Filipino-American love interest

Ketchup Eusebio as George, a cheerful kind of person

Charee Pineda as Ynah, a role model

Gee Canlas as Joy, a talkative call-center agent

It begins that it was Alex's birthday and he wants this day to be fun-filled with his barkadas except the fact that Nora is missing. To find Nora, Alex calls in his "Sparkada" pals to find Nora in a cross country trip. We all know there are five characters but we decided that there are six characters because the sixth character will be the main character car, the Chevrolet Spark, armed with Havana Green paint and loads of extras.

How far will the world-proven Chevrolet Spark and the "Sparkada" friends go to find Nora? Tune in to this special TV drama on Sunday after UAAP on Studio 23!

The much-awaited Spark 1.0L

2011 Chevrolet Spark

When the Chevrolet Spark landed in South Korea as a replacement to the GM Daewoo Matiz Creative, as part of replacing the Daewoo name into Chevrolet (and the company name from GM Daewoo Auto and Technology into GM Korea Company), we noticed that they got a 1.0L DOHC engine. Ours got a 1.2L engine, so that makes it "BITIN" for sure.

By special request, a 1.0L DOHC engine is now available for the Chevrolet Spark, The Covenant Car Company said...

Morning vs. Spark

2012 Kia Morning

2011 GM Korea Chevrolet Spark

Yes, both of these fuel-efficient compacts were made in South Korea. The Kia Morning was made in Seosan, South Korea, while the Chevrolet Spark, in the other hand, was made in Changwon, South Korea. For the fact, the Kia Morning is now on its second-generation model while the Chevrolet Spark is the new name of the GM Daewoo Matiz Creative since the GM Daewoo name was replaced into GM Korea Company, using the Chevrolet brand as their front. The Spark was arrived in the Philippines a few months ago while we are still waiting when will Columbian Autocar Corporation bring the second-generation Morning as the new Picanto (2nd half of this year perhaps?). Let's tackle both of these Korean made compacts and try to figure which fits my discriminative taste.

CASE ONE:
First of all, the second-generation Kia Morning (known worldwide as the Picanto) takes center stage in the compact category since it was debuted in late January 2011. Come to think of it, the design looks more matured since the first generation but to me the round shape on the new exterior looks more bubbly and chubby, making it one big fat compact car others wouldn't know what comes next. Under the hood, the new Morning is equipped with the Kappa MPI 1.0L engine that produces 82ps/6400rpm and in terms of fuel economy, the 4-speed automatic variant can go for about 19km/L while the 5-speed manual transmission goes to about 22km/L.

CASE TWO:
As always said, the Chevrolet Spark from Hankook GM (GM Korea Company) is the new name of GM Daewoo Matiz Creative as part of replacing the highly criticized GM Daewoo Auto and Technology name into Hankook GM (GM Korea Company), using the internationally-acclaimed Chevrolet as a primary brand in Korea. Other cars from GM Daewoo such as the Damas van, Labo truck, and the premium sedan Alpheon (based on the second-generation Buick LaCrosse) retains under unique brands. Anyway, enough what I said, the Chevrolet Spark offers the best design only this compact hatchback can achieve, unlike its rival, the second-generation Kia Morning, which has some weird bubbly and chubby look. The Spark offers two engine types; a 1.0L DOHC petrol engine and a 1.0L LPGi engine that runs on Liquefied Petroleum Gas. The 1.0L DOHC petrol engine produces 70ps/6,400rpm of power output and with a 5-speed manual, it goes for about 21.0km/L of fuel economy. The 4-speed automatic transmission equipped on the Spark can go for about 17.0km/L.

OK, so I admit it. The Spark is more stylish than the new Morning/Picanto while the new Morning/Picanto is more fuel efficient than the Chevrolet Spark made from Hankook GM.

GM Korea Chevrolet Spark

2011 GM Korea Chevrolet Spark

The GM Korea Chevrolet Spark (쉐보레 스파크) is the new name of GM Daewoo Matiz Creative as part of replacing the name GM Daewoo Auto and Technology into GM Korea Company, using the fastest growing Chevrolet brand as a front according to the company's CEO, Mike Arcamone. Despite its name change, it is not counted as one of the eight new vehicles to be launched in South Korea. It is Mike Arcamone's response to 38% of the Matiz Creative customers swapping badges into the Chevrolet Spark. This decision is done under the demands of South Korean customers. As of now, most Matiz Creative customers in South Korea have the option to change nameplates into the Chevy Spark.

What retains is two engine types; the 1.0L gasoline engine and the 1.0L liquefied petroleum gas (LPGi) engine. The 1.0L gasoline engine provides 70ps/6,400rpm of power output, 9.4kg.m/4,800rpm of torque output, and in can go for about 21.0km/L for the 5-speed manual and 17.0km/L for the 4-speed auto. The Spark LPGi drops 5ps of power, 1kg.m of torque, and can travel up to 17.0km/L for the 5MT grade and 13.6km/L for the 4AT grade.

SPECIAL EDITION:

2011 GM Korea Chevrolet Spark
Special Edition

As a welcome treat in South Korea, GM Korea Company offered the Chevrolet Spark Special Edition, which sports Camaro-like stripes, piano black paneling, and sporty 15-inch rims.

COLOR VARIATION:
1) Iceland Blue
2) Havana Green
3) Santorini Blue
4) Monaco Pink
5) Belgian Brown
6) Barcelona Red
7) Prague Black
8) Sapporo White
9) Manhattan Silver

My Comment:
The Spark is a world-proven compact car packed with world-proven size, world-proven space, world-proven performance, and world-proven fuel economy customers will love. This response from 38% percent of Matiz Creative customers changing their badges into Chevy Spark sounds demanding but this is a cause for the Korean market.

Now on, Daewoo Matiz and Lacetti will be known as GM Korea's Chevrolet Spark and Chevrolet Cruze!

GM Korea Chevrolet Spark and Cruze

GM Daewoo's Lacetti Premiere (launched since late 2008) and GM Daewoo's Matiz Creative (launched since Autumn 2009), will be renamed as GM Korea Chevrolet Spark and GM Korea Chevrolet Cruze (differentiating from the US Chevrolet Cruze, launched since Autumn 2010) as part of the Korean launch of Chevrolet and the renaming of "GM Daewoo Auto and Techonology" into "GM Korea Company" starting late March 2011.

Despite renames, they are not counted as one of the eight new Chevrolet models coming to South Korea this year, ranging from the Orlando ALV, Aveo Sedan and Hatch, the Camaro (CBU from America), Captiva SUV, new midsize sedan, an unnamed imported Chevy model, and something that will built at the Bupyeong plant.

We already have these two in the Philippines so the new naming will take effect to South Korea this March.

GM Daewoo Matiz Creative

Does everyone remember Skids from Transformers Revenge of the Fallen? You remember how this super-cool Autobot look like in car form. Well, the point is that Skids character in car form was the sign of the new compact car created by General Motors via the GM Daewoo division. To tell the truth, Skids will be a take-home car on one name: the new generation Matiz (now with the Creative moniker on it).

Do not upset over the wonderful features seen on the new Matiz because these looks can bring the term "fashionista" to the next level! When the outside has based on the Chevrolet Beat concept compact car as seen on the 2007 New York Auto Show, there are new exterior features that leave owners to inch closer than other compacts. On the front view, the diamond headlamps shine like a 24-karat diamond. When others say that these headlamps shine like a diamond, which is because of the High Intensity Discharge headlamps that shine through the dark roads. Imagine how our pal Skids would like to see it through his own eyes! On his side view, where can passengers find a door that leads them to the rear seats? Just like the Nissan Pathfinder or the Armada, a secret rear door leads you to the rear seats. Skids really do have a secret entrance for other passengers to seat on the back.

On the inside the Matiz Creative, the others think that someone hit an instant jackpot on the inside. From the stylish seats that made professionally for customers, dashboard adds a bold finesse that best served with the new dynamic meter cluster that displays real-time information and the performance the Matiz done for.

The big question is, what kind of engine that powers our pal, Skids, all the way to the danger zone? Here is the answer: the Matiz Creative has powered with General Motors' new 1.0-litre S-TEC II DOHC engine capable of releasing a nimble power of just 70ps at 6000rpm. Available transmission is a 4-speed automatic transmission.

IT IS A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU, SKIDS.

Hearing out about how our Autobot friend, Skids, became the take-home car for sale, what would our Chevrolet Camaro friend, Bumblebee, would react about this? With General Motors emerged as a new GM after long weeks of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing, the Matiz became the perfect global car in different GM brands. Is there a chance of becoming a success or a failure for our Autobot pal, Skids? Be prepared because Skids will come at different countries to achieve total popularity thanks to its diamond headlamps, secret rear door and the dynamic meter cluster that you can see on the Matiz Creative! Moreover, when it hits to our shores as a Chevrolet, it will be bigger than our acts of Transformers-ism the same way we did to Bumblebee!
