Renault Arkana

First introduced in Russia, the Renault Arkana is a coupe crossover that prefers to speak Russian rather than French because this quirk is made for but after several thoughts and reconsiderations, Renault finally brought the Arkana where it is supposed to belong but with a major twist.

2022 Renault Arkana

The Renault Arkana, priced at 29,700 Euros plus additional costs, finally comes home but with a major twist that differentiates itself from the time we first saw it in Russia. That's right because while it looks almost identical, the mechanicals and the interior have been altered to suit Western Europe, and instead of being imported from Moscow for obvious and subtle reasons, the new Arkana is imported from South Korea.

2022 Renault Arkana

2022 Renault Arkana interior

Yes, the new Arkana is an import from South Korea, where it was known and sold as the Renault Samsung XM3, and judging from the styling, the Arkana is similarly styled just like its Korean relative except for the front face that made the first impression. While the XM3's front face is striking to look at, the Arkana's front face is somewhat milder and more serious to look at.

Come to the interior and you are greeted by the  9.3-inch touch screen that is not friendly for speedo boys if you know what I mean as well as the longer 10.25 TFT display that takes place from the typical speedos. Don't worry, there are knobs for the air-con and that's it. On the passenger side, this five-seater is not bad to make a living out of it and the boot space of up to 513 liters with the secret compartment opened means it can carry anything when taken for a family outing or for business in the case of TNVS or deliveries.

2022 Renault Arkana

Unlike the Arkanas of the East, this Arkana made with the French drivers in mind is powered by two kinds of powertrains such as the 1.3L TCe 140 mated to a 6-speed EDC and the 1,6L E-TECH 145 hybrid mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The former is the quicker one because it can go from 0-100kph in 9.8 seconds and has a top speed of 200kph but the latter is something to talk about. While the top speed is slower than a Japanese car, its fuel efficiency of 4.2L/100km based on NEDC standards is proof that this is the go-getter for those who are going the extra mile.

Of course, the Arkana is a front-wheel-drive-only crossover and cheap but it behaves almost like the Megane in a good way and it's basically not old-fashioned by the way it moves. That's because it runs on the bits and bobs from the Megane rather than the Dacia bits that its Russian equivalent uses.

On the issue of safety, the Arkana is packed with a wide array of safety features such as Highway & Traffic Jam Companion, Adaptive cruise control (with Stop & Go), Active emergency braking system, Blind spot warning, Lane departure warning, and lane guard system, and many others.

Love it or hate it, this is the Arkana that you should be focusing on, not the other way around because now that the Arkana finally hits the European Union as an import from South Korea instead of Russia, there's so much to catch up with Renault's first coupe crossover that got them noticed.

Renault Samsung XM3

With the Renault Samsung lineup consisting of just the SM6 sedan and the QM6 crossover, the unsung Korean carmaker run under Groupe Renault's arms has added a new kind of car that will keep motorists confused because what that is is their first-ever coupe crossover called the XM3.

Priced at 17.63 million won plus additional costs, this is the first time Renault Samsung has gone the X factor for all unknown reasons no one knows after Renault Samsung has done almost a lot with their sedan offerings and their SUVs, not to mention selling Renault cars for the first time in South Korea a few years ago. With questions lurking about the future of the Renault Samsung with the abundance of Renault in the South Korean car market, looks like the XM3 shows that they're still pretty much in business for the Korean carmaker no one knows.

Similarly, the XM3 is basically known by the Russians as the Renault Arkana because by the looks of it, it's broadly similar to the coupe crossover sold by the Russians but unlike its Russian equivalent which runs on Dacia mechanicals, the XM3 runs on the same platform as the current Renault Megane and with the potential to sell it on the European market very soon, this Korean equivalent of the Arkana is worth the shock for anyone getting behind the wheel.

While the coupe crossover styling is unmistakenly German, just like today's luxury German coupe crossovers the world knows, the interior is unmistakenly Renault by the sound of it. Yes, drivers are greeted with the 9.3-inch touch screen which is not friendly for speedo boys if you know what I mean as well as the longer 10.25 TFT display which takes place from the typical speedos. Don't worry, there are knobs for the air-con and that's it. On the passenger side, this five-seater is not bad to make a living out of it and the boot space of up to 513 liters with the secret compartment opened means it can carry anything when taken for a family outing or for business in the case of TNVS or deliveries. A decent workhorse if you may.

The XM3 is powered by two engine choices such as the 123PS 1.6 GTe engine mated to a CVT and the 152PS TCe 260 1,332cc engine mated to a 7-speed EDC. The latter is the nearly enjoyable variant of the range because it's got some gusto to get going but being a front-wheel-drive only crossover, what the XM3's good at is being a showoff on the streets although some are bothered to look at a cheap coupe crossover that tries to behave like the Germans. Although cheap, the XM3 behaves almost like the Megane in a good way and it's basically not old-fashioned by the way it moves. That's pretty good but with numerous ADAS stuff in store, it's worth noticing.

The XM3 may be a Korean version of the Renault Arkana sold by the Russians but it differentiates from it because it's a sensible coupe crossover with sophisticated behavior too hard for words to describe. If this crossover has the potential to go Europe-wide as a Renault, there's a lot to be taken care of.

Renault Koleos II

Renault's first crossover SUV, the Koleos, is now on its second-generation and it's now larger, roomier, and more luxurious than the old Koleos it replaces while most of the modern-day Renault DNA has been injected inside and out so you might expect that this is just another Renault with the same look as the other new Renaults from the range but it's too early to tell about it until later. So, what's it all about?

2017 Renault Koleos
It's hardly almost a decade passed since Renault introduced its first ever 4x4 crossover to the world and for this second-generation Koleos, it's ready to mark a new beginning for Renault's first crossover in the lineup with new design, new interior, and new features that will keep it competitive in today's conditions. As mentioned earlier, most of the modern-day Renault DNA has been injected inside and out so you will notice that it dons the same exterior cues from the Espace, Talisman, Scenic, and Megane. As on the inside...

2017 Renault Koleos interior

Renault's becoming the French equivalent of BMW because like Bimmers, the Renaults of today are donning the same new interior look and pretty soon, most Renaults will don the same interior over and and over again but what's that really for?  Cost-saving measures? No one ever know but onto the subject of being larger than the old Koleos, seating for five people still holds but it's surprisingly roomier than the old Koleos as well as the boot space good enough for all those open spaces. In addition to that, offers luxury car features in a not-so-expensive crossover such as BOSE Surround Sound System and it even comes with Renault's R-Link 2 that comes with smartphone connectivity that works well with your iPhones and Androids courtesy of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2017 Renault Koleos

The new Koleos is powered by an all-diesel lineup consisting of a 1.6L and a 2.0L Energy dCi engine with 175PS of power and 380Nm of torque with CO2 emissions of 156g/km. They are mated with either a 6-speed manual gearbox and an XTRONIC CVT sourced from Nissan. Because the new Koleos uses the same underpinnings from the Nissan X-TRAIL, it comes with ALL-MODE 4x4-i made to tackle any surface and weather with ease. With settings like AUTO, LOCK, and 2WD, this system makes the new Koleos to adapt through any road conditions no matter the weather and due to its new platform which is a joint effort of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, it feels very moderate to drive on the road.

2017 Renault Koleos

Active Emergency Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Safe Distance Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Sport Warning, Tiredness Detection, rear view camera, Automatic High/Low Beam headlines, parking sensors, and Easy Park Assist, these are some of the safety features the new Koleos has to offer and it can be controlled via the R-Link 2 tablet on the dashboard. This is like usual formation for Europe's cars because it's EU regulation for most cars to come ready with safety tech and why would anyone care about it anyhow.

The new Renault Koleos starts at 29,900 Euros while the more luxurious Initiale Paris variant, with special luxurious equipment on it and exclusive colors, costs 41,400 plus on-road costs. So, while the design is plain stale for a modern-day Renault, the new Koleos is a big step for the crossover market and with the ALL-MODE 4x4-i system, R-Link 2, and larger dimensions, expect some healthy reception about the newly regenerated crossover from Renault.

Renault Samsung QM6

A few moments ago, Renault uncovered their second-generation Koleos crossover and while it looks bigger than its predecessor, it's becoming one of the new Renaults to incorporate its new signature design since the Espace MPV last year, the Talisman saloon and estate, and the new Megane early this year. It's slated to be sold in most European markets, including France, this 2017, but first, it has to make its presence in Australia, Turkey, the Middle East, some South American countries, and China this year. Also, the second-generation Koleos will make its mark on the South Korean market as the brand new QM6, a larger, more luxurious replacement to the smaller QM5, based on the previous Koleos.

2017 Renault Samsung QM6

Alright, because the QM6 will serve us a preview of the next Renault Koleos, set to hit Europe this next year, time to dive into what to expect in this Korea-spec version sold as a Renault Samsung QM6. Because it has the same look as its sedan brother, the SM6, thanks to the new Renault norm look that has been plastered on new models as part of their "la vie, avec passion" company slogan, there's not much to tell on its design inside and out but take this, while this is exactly bigger than the old QM5, the new QM6's bigger dimensions made this on par with its potential competitors such as Kia's Sorento, Hyundai's Maxcruz, Ssangyong's Rexton, or even Chevrolet's Captiva (note: the one that South Koreans had). How it fares is everyone's guess.

2017 Renault Samsung QM6 interior
2017 Renault Samsung QM6 interior

Of course, even though you can expect typical Renault interior on the new QM6 (Korea's version of the next generation Koleos), its big dimension resulted to a much generous interior space for five people as well as better boot space big enough to fit most of your garage sale haul on the weekends. The QM6 offers luxury car features in a not-so-expensive crossover such as BOSE Surround Sound System and it even comes with Samsung's S-Link multimedia tablet screen on the dashboard, like the SM6 had, serving as a control center for functions like infotainment, navigation, communications, radio, and driver aids.

2017 Renault Samsung QM6

As a crossover made to challenge the rules, the QM6 feels like it's not your average full-size crossover at this caliber. In fact, it uses the same underpinnings used in crossovers like the smaller Renault Kadjar and the Nissan X-Trail, and platform aside, the QM6, as to be expect on the next Koleos, features ALL MODE 4x4-i, which constantly optimizes torque to all four wheels for stability on snowy and other slippery surfaces, as reminiscent to today's Nissan X-TRAIL done to its consumers. It can be switched to front-wheel drive or permanent all-wheel drive, depending on the conditions the road calls on it. No matter the weather calls on this car, it's always ready with its 4WD technology at its disposal. Not bad for a clever multirole.

Under the hood, the QM6 is available only with a 2.0L dCi engine that produces 177PS of power and 38.7kg-m of torque. Much to the dismay of being a European crossover with a Korean citizenship, the QM6 is mated to a new-generation XTRONIC CVT. Doesn't say much but it promises a combined fuel efficiency of 12.8km/L and CO2 emission of around 148g/km, although Renault Samsung were declined to explain the full story about the QM6's performance and ecology. What I did know that while they didn't disclose about its safety tech, it will theoretically had a large Array of Driver Aids (ADAS), which can be controlled from its S-Link tablet.

The asking price? It starts from 27,400,000 up to 34,700,000 Korean Won, which is more costly than the QM5 it replaces but that puts it near the spot where the Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe sit beneath their laurels. Even though this is a brand new SUV from the Renault Samsung lineup, this is just a fresh taste of what the next Renault Koleos can do when it hits Europe by next year, if they get all the paperwork done to do so.

Available colors: Cloud Pearl, Golden Beige, Ultra Silver, Urban Grey, Meissen Blue, and Metallic Black.

Renault-Samsung SM6 vs. GM Korea Chevrolet All New Malibu

Two luxury midsize saloons sourced from the West, one from France and the other from the United States, have finally made it into South Korean territories but adjusted for South Korean specifications. First and foremost, let's meet the South Korean version of the recently-released Renault Talisman saloon, the first-ever Renault Samsung SM6.

2016 Renault Samsung SM6
2016 Renault Samsung SM6 interior

Well, what do we have here is a midsize luxury saloon that got the South Korean folks from Renault noticed when they heard that their French parents launched the new Talisman saloon, the first to incorporate Renault's new design language applied in the new Megane, new Espace, and the upcoming Koleos crossover. Of course, China does had a Renault Talisman, but only in the SM7. Because the new Talisman is made to be the direct replacement to the aging Laguna and the less-successful Latitude flagship, which was sourced from Korea as an SM5, there's a one-sided theory that their new SM6 will replace both the SM5 and the SM7 at the same pace but while the two aging saloons are still in Renault-Samsung's lineup for now, we'll have to wait for Renault's South Korea subsidy to reach their verdict.

Anyway, the first-ever SM6 looks broadly similar to the Talisman at so many angles. You can expect the new Renault design implanted all over the outer details and so is the questionable interior with the touch screen implanted on the dashboard to warn speedo boys "you can't replace me, suckers!" Yep, today's modern cars feature irreplaceable stuff so no speedo boy can remove it with their bare hands. In partial terms of comfort, the new SM6 is German saloon quality despite being a French car with a South Korean passport booked in. You can really tell just how premium those seats are when you lay your butts on it and it's not surprisingly half bad to feel just how "luxurious" the interior is. Rest assured, they done it to make it as luxurious as the Germans.

One feature you will notice is the Multi-Sense feature which allows the driver to switch through four different modes (Neutral, Eco, Comfort, and Sport) and each mode affects different stuff around the car in terms of driving, comfort, tech, and so on. There's a Personal mode where the driver can customize the settings of his or her liking. You can change how it affects the lighting, the speedo, the engine sound, the climate control, the seats, the steering, the powertrain, or the suspension. Sounds fancy but complicating if you mess it up.

Under the hood, the SM6 offers a choice of a 1.6 TCe engine, a 2.0 GDe engine, or a 2.0 LPe DONUT (for rental use). The 1.6 TCe engine develops 190PS of power and 26.5kg.m of torque while delivering a claimed combined fuel economy of 12.8km/L while the 2.0 GDe engine produces 150PS of power and 20.6kg.m of torque with 12.3km/L of claimed combined fuel economy. Both of these engines come with a 7-speed EDC gearbox as well as auto start-stop system which allows its engine to shut off when stopped at a set of lights and then starts again when you set off.

For safety, the SM6 comes with Active Emergency Braking System, Safe Distance Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Automatic High Low Beam, Adaptive Cruise Control, and a feature that allows this car to park by itself.

The price? It starts from 23,760,000 to 31,900,000 Korean Won. That sounds more accessible to own than the SM5 and the SM7 saloons in the lineup but if you want more that you expect from the SM6 but unsure about its pricing, best to look at this alternative.

2016 GM Korea Chevrolet Malibu
2016 GM Korea Chevrolet Malibu interior

This is the all-new Chevrolet Malibu, the one that came out last year Stateside but this one's Korean-made and it's a well-match for the Asian markets desperate to get their hands on this potent rival to Korean-made saloons such as the Hyundai Sonata and the Kia K5, but since no Asia-Pacific country is heavily interested with the new Malibu, this car will have to make do with the South Koreans.

If I recall from last year, the new Malibu sounds very reasonable when compared against other family midsize saloons in its class, but with all that tech induced in this car, the new Malibu feels like a class apart, well despite the dynamics that doesn't feel like a European saloon. I once said that because it looks more American, chances are too slim for now. Guess what, Asian countries like South Korea and China has one and it's unsure if some other Asia-Pacific countries will get the new one, but in the meantime...

It still looks identical to the one sold in North America as are the features as well as the comfort and conveniences offered. Unlike the North American model, which comes with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity and as a first, it is available with the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, this South Korean model doesn't have internet connectivity on it and it's only compatible with Apple CarPlay. No questions asked.

Under the hood, the Malibu, like the North American one, still comes with the turbocharged 1.5L ECOTEC engine with Variable Valve Timing and the more powerful and turbocharged 2.0L ECOTEC engine but both of these engines are mated with the GEN III 6-speed automatic gearbox. It's easier said than done because with the 2.0L is focused on performance, thanks to its 253PS of power, the 1.5L model focuses solely on fuel economy thanks to its combined fuel economy of 13km/L, Chevrolet claims but let's hope this fuel consumption doesn't cheat in the eyes of many drivers.

Keep this in mind because South Korea's new Malibu is different from USA's new Malibu, there is no Teen Driver Feature present here despite the new model is offered with seventeen driver aids available by request.

Anyway, wanna know how it cost? It's 23,100,000 to 31,810,000 Korean Won, so it's less expensive to own than the SM6 and it's more powerful as well. Now, you had a choice. If you were a businessman living in South Korea and you have a choice between two interracial luxury midsize saloons sourced from the West but altered for South Korean specifications, which would you pick?

Renault Samsung SM5 Nova

2015 Renault Samsung SM5 Nova

This is the second time the latest-generation Renault-Samsung SM5 has been given a facelift. The first facelift came out in late 2012 as the SM5 Platinum. Now, for 2015, the Renault-Samsung SM5 has been given a facelift once again and is now called "SM5 Nova".

Drawing inspiration from its big brother, the recently-facelifted SM7 Nova, the new SM5 Nova features a brand new front face that looks as conservative as the previous facelift and it looks even better looking than before.

Although the interior's been slightly changed, the software's been changed to accommodate the Smart Mirror system for the first time on a Korean car. This system mirrors the driver's smartphone's display on the sat-nav, allowing the driver to take control of the smartphone's features in the car. This is a breakthrough in the world of in-car connectivity. They can check maps, call and text others, listen to music, and do anything they want just like what they do on their smartphones every day.

It still comes with the same 2.0L petrol, 1.6L turbo petrol, and the 1.5L diesel engine of choice, and depending on the model, transmission types are either the XTRONIC CVT or the dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

There's also an LPi version of the SM5 as well which comes with the same 2.0L petrol engine as the normal one but with the LPG Donut Tank located underneath the boot to maintain boot capacity. However, the LPi version of the SM5 is available only for fleet purposes and not for private ownership.

Prices now start at 22,500,000 Won for the PE model with the 2.0L petrol engine up to 28,900,000 models for the 2.0L RE model. The turbocharged TCE model starts at 27,900,000 Won while the D model (the one with the diesel engine) costs 25,900,000 Won.

Renault Samsung New SM7 Nova

2015 Renault Samsung New SM7 Nova

The second-generation SM7, Renault Samsung's flagship saloon, has been around since it was launched in South Korea in August 2011 and has been around for three years here and in the People's Republic of China as the Renault Talisman. Yes, it's three years from now and it's time for the SM7 to get a minor change.

For the 2015MY minor model change, it's now called the "New SM7 Nova" and while it looks the same as the pre-facelift model, the New SM7 Nova features a brand new front face that, in my mind, looks better than the old one and this new look adds a dynamic flair for Renault Samsung's flagship saloon.

Although the interior looks the same as the outgoing model, there have been some minor updates to its hardware and for the fun of it, the "smart mirroring" system is introduced. The "smart mirroring" system uses Wi-Fi connectivity to link smartphones with the car's infotainment system. Best of all, it's standard on most variants.

2015 Renault Samsung New SM7 Nova

Like its pre-facelift model, the New SM7 Nova still comes with either a 2.5L or 3.5L V6 petrol engine while mated with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.5L V6 petrol engine develops 190HP of power, 243Nm of torque, and a fuel economy of 10.2km/L. The 3.5L V6 petrol engine, on the other hand, produces 258HP of power, 330Nm of torque, and 9.4km/L of fuel economy.

The SM7 Nova starts from 30,400,000 up to 38,700,000 Korean Won.

Renault Samsung QM5 Neo and QM3

The QM5 crossover has been around longer than the Brainiacs and this crossover remains a competitive one even though it's becoming less appreciative as time goes by. Made in Korea, sold globally as the Renault Koleos, and uses components from the Renault Nissan Alliance, the QM5 sure knows how to be a global competitor in the world of crossovers but there are only a little people having one of those because of the competition heating up.

2014 Renault Samsung QM5 Neo

For its last-ditch effort to set things right, the Korean division of the Renault Nissan Alliance prepped up a facelifted version of the QM5, a few months after the Renault Koleos got facelifted for the European market. It's called the QM5 Neo and yes, this crossover really want to fight 'till its last breath. So what's for this swan song?

2014 Renault Samsung QM5 Neo interior

For its brand new 2014 QM5 Neo, you can notice the new front face as shown from Renault's design language and this new look can be somewhat summarized as athletic and premium, what the carmaker states. They've also added new stuff like air vents in the central B-pillars so that air, hot or cold, can get through the rear seat passengers without the drama. A tire-pressure monitoring system is added and let's not talk about it because no one sure knows what it is.

On the engine side, here's a plot twist though because the former's 2.5L CVTC engine has been thrown away to the great junkyard in the sky and now the available engines offered were a smaller 2.0L petrol engine and a 2.0L diesel engine. That's it. The 2.0L petrol engine develops 143HP of power, 20.1kg-m of torque, and a power-to-weight ratio of about 10.98kg/hp because the front-wheel drive model with the 2.0L petrol engine weighs around 1570kg. Mated to a CVT gearbox, the fuel economy is just shy about 10.6km/L and CO2 emission of 166g/km.

The 2.0L diesel adds 200kg of weight but it delivers 173HP of power, 36.7kgm of torque, and 13.2km/L of fuel economy, again, thanks to the CVT gearbox. For front-wheel drive models, the power-to-weight ratio is about 9.86kg/hp. Exclusive to the diesel model is an available 4WD option for all-round capability, well as a theory.

Suspension-wise, the QM5 Neo has a front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link suspension to make handling a bit European-ish, and again, as a theory because I suspect, it kinda behaves like an everyday European saloon car for a crossover made by the Koreans. He he he...

Well, I guess that's pretty much enough for the QM5 Neo but because it was priced from about 22,500,000 to 33,100,000 Korean Won, you might think that it's a bit too expensive but what if you want something cheaper than the QM5 but something a bit stylish and more convincing than the QM5 Neo? Well, it's this...

2014 Renault Samsung QM3
Yes, it's a brand new QM3. Unlike the QM5, it's available only in front-wheel drive, just like its Euro equivalent, the Renault Captur. And unlike the QM5, it's powered by a smaller 1.5L diesel engine mated to a 6-speed EDC gearbox.

2014 Renault Samsung QM3 interior

It looks more targeted squarely at today's computer geeks except in my eye, it's much more well behaved and well mannered than the QM5 Neo but for a quick drawback, remember what I told about the Renault Captur a couple of months ago? You don't? Well, never mind about that but no matter how hard I explained about this new model, it's still a proven hit among Koreans everywhere and the first 1000 units were all accounted for since its launch. Quite impressive for RSM, though, but what motivates it?

The price tag for the QM3 began in 22,500,000 Korean Won, similar to the QM5 Neo's starting price and because it's compact and as small as a supermarrow, it's not all that complicated to drive it around the streets of Gangnam. And because it has a fuel economy of 18.5km/L, it's worth being a cross-country companion and by scientific calculations; the 10,000km per year fuel cost, in today's climate, would be about more than a 1,082,000 Korean Won (10,000km ÷ 18.5kmpl x 2000KRW* per Litre). Anyway, forget about maths! Let's conclude it in a simplified manner because in the end, you have a choice between these two crossovers from Renault Samsung.

*estimated but fuel prices may vary.

If you want something more of an all-rounder if you're under the weather, your best bet would be the QM5 because the diesel model has an available 4WD model but if its the sense of the city you're after and if you're a bit of a techie, then you might be off with the QM3. The QM3 maybe less powerful than the QM5 but because it feels so light, you can have a lot more fun in it but not at all. After all, they're can be worth a brain burner if you do the math on both of these.

RSM revises SM5 and SM7 for 2014 model year

Renault Samsung New SM5 Platinum

 Renault Samsung SM7

Renault Samsung Motors, the SoKor-only Korean affiliate of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, lightly revised two of the luxury sedans from their lineup, the SM5 and the flagship SM7, for the 2014 model year.

Starting with the 2014MY SM5, newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels and black faux leather were added on the PE trim while the SE trim had is price now 600,000 Won lowered. On the LE trim, it now comes with blind spot information system  and for the SE trim, LED lighting package was added. For the LE and RE trim, a class-first ABS front seat headrest trim was applied.

Now onto the 2014MY SM7, the addition of the blind spot information system and forward warning system has been implemented for added safety. On the RE and RE35 trim, dark chrome 18-inch wheels, silver and piano black interior trim are implemented.

As for pricing, the 2014MY SM5 now starts at 24,500,000 Won for the SE Art model (the special one) up to 28,700,000 for the RE Art model. The 2014MY SM7, on the other hand, now starts at 30,280,000 Won for the SE model up to 38,650,000 Won for the RE35 model.

Renault Samsung SM5 Platinum

2013 Renault Samsung New SM5 Platinum

Now I have to admit it that this facelifted version of the Renault Samsung SM5 could give us a hint of what a facelifted Renault Latitude could look like but sadly, because of the Renault Fluence facelift gaining a Clio-styled nose rather than the one from the facelifted SM3, chances are that this kind of thing that we're talking about now won't be applied to the facelifted Latitude soon and instead go on with the Clio-style nose because this is the new trademark for Renault.

Anyway, this here is the New SM5 Platinum, the updated version of the SM5 executive midsize saloon car that has been around for two years since this generation was released in South Korea since January 2010. For this latest version, the New SM5 Platinum draws some inspiration from the All New SM7 so the exterior kinda looks like it, except the rear lamps which is still an SM5, only refined. I think that this facelifted version is getting more of a matured 25-year-old businessman who wants to stand out against his rivals.

2013 Renault Samsung New SM5 Platinum interior

On the inside though, it's not that desperately impractical and it's getting more matured to cater someone in a coat and tie. What's new here is the sat-nav that now checks your average fuel consumption and also, SMart Connect first applied on the latest version of the SM3. This feature allows this navigation system's firmware to be updated via Wi-Fi and not just that, it gets you access to SK Telecom's MelOn mobile music portal service. That name is familiar for K-POP fans many because of the MelOn Music Awards but for those, MelOn is SK Telecom's mobile music portal service which is the world's first wired and wireless interworking music service that allows you to enjoy your favorite tunes anytime and anywhere. It's legal, you are first to listen the world's best songs, and SK offers real-time streaming and downloads through its Music Rental Service.

Although, no mechanical changes were made on the 2.0L CVTC-II L4 engine capable of releasing 141PS of power, the new generation XTRONIC CVT helped propelled the New SM5 Platinum's fuel economy of 14.1km/L. That's an improvement from the previous 12.1km/L. Sadly, the 2.0L engine is the only engine available on the New SM5 Platinum. Period.

The New SM5 Platinum tries to keep it fresh during its two-year tenure and I think that now, it's becoming one of the best executive midsize sedans in South Korea. It maybe built to compete against the Malibu, the K5, and the Sonata but in every intangible way, the New SM5 Platinum shows who's the boss. It shows who's in charge of everything. It always tries to woo the crowd from Gangnam...Er, am I saying that loud am I?

Anyway, it's now well-mannered, well-tailored, and surprisingly elegant to drive if you are the kind of man who thinks that his life is like a Korean drama.

Available Colors: Black, Mars Gray, White, Ebony Brown, Ultra Silver, and Pearl White.

Renault Samsung SM3 L38 Minor Change

2013 Renault Samsung SM3

The second-generation Renault Samsung SM3 (L38) was been there for three years and this car deserves a minor change. Well, it happened now. The L38 SM3 now gets its facelift and this should be interesting.

SMART LIFE

For its facelift, the SM3 now has a new front design that provides modern dynamism for this car. This front grille on the facelifted SM3 seems like it came from the Kia Morning. Familiar? Afraid not but this new look is all about being stylish midsize sedan for the Korean yuppies. The 17-inch alloy wheels have given a new look to give it a bit more feel. Those redesigned front lamps, side mirrors, side body kit, refined door handles, and some cosmetic upgrades really try to keep the SM3 fresh and rejuvenated. On the inside, that's a different story because the instrumental panel's new to us and it's called Dynamic Color Digital Crystal. That seems to be somewhat familiar but this new instrumental really gives a clear view on the speed, the rev, the status, anything. However, the Dynamic Color Digital Crystal is not just new to this model, there's one thing that I really like and it's the new SM3's SMart Connect.

Speaking of music, the BOSE Surround System was equipped on the more expensive versions to provide a better sound quality while driving. Listening to your greatest hits never sound so good on an everyday midsize sedan. Also, there is a massager on the driver's seat, heated seats, Samsung Plasma Ionizer, perfume diffuser, 3 zone aircon, and this smart i navigation feature. All those conveniences really add a nice touch on the revised SM3.

We're now into the twilight zone which is the performance. As of now, the SM3 offers only the 1.6L gasoline engine generates about 117HP of power and 16.1kg-m of torque. Because it was mated with the new XTRONIC CVT, the fuel economy is now 15km/L and CO2 emissions of 114.0g/km. It's now even more economical than ever because what Renault Samsung says that this is the best-in-class fuel economy.

Available colors are; Ultra Silver, White, Black, Mars Gary, Pearl White, Ebony Brown, and Oriental Red.

My comment:
The 2013 SM3 is not just even more dynamic in terms of exterior design but it's now made to be more technological thanks to its SMart Connect feature that Korean yuppies would make sense of. Sadly however, I didn't like it. That's it.

Renault Koleos Phase II

2012 Renault Koleos

With the facelifted Renault Samsung QM5 on sale now, it seems that Renault's Koleos is following suit as well. The Koleos' minor change now sports a new front face that makes is sophisticated and the grille can be somewhat similar to the Renault Latitude. As for the interior, it remains the same as the pre-facelift model.

The Renault Koleos Phase II comes with FF or 4WD layouts. It is available in dCi 150, and dCi 175 engines. It seems that this new Koleos is now only focused on the Euro V diesel variants rather than gasoline variants because most of the Europeans think that diesel is cheaper than unleaded, well that's a joke. Anyway, the 2.0L dCi 150 engine produces 150PS of power and 320Nm of torque. This helps the Koleos reach 0 -100kmh in 10 seconds and it can do flat out in 183kmh. It can even achieve a combined fuel economy of 17.5km/L (5.7L/100km) and CO2 emissions of 148g/km but with the 4WD layout, it can achieve a fuel economy of 15.6km/L (6.4L/100km) and CO2 emissions of 166g/km and with the 6-speed automatic equipped, it can achieve a fuel economy of 14.1km/L (7.1L/100km) and CO2 emissions of 186g/km.

The high end 2.0L dCi 175 with standard 4WD layout produces 175PS of power and 360Nm of torque, helping the Koleos achieve 0-100kmh in 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 191kmh. It can even achieve a combined fuel economy of 15.6km/L (6.4L/100km) and CO2 emissions of 166g/km.

With two lines, Carminat and Exception, available the new Renault Koleos comes in six colors such as Beige Mineral, Blanc Perle, Gris Argent, Gris Mars, Noir Métallique, and Blanc Glacier.

My comment:
This facelifted Koleos is all about being update on Renault's first full-fledged SUV but too bad though, it's still not offered in the United Kingdom because of poor sales.

Renault Fluence Z.E.

2012 Renault Fluence Z.E.

2012 Renault Fluence Z.E. interior

Renault's Fluence Z.E. is the medium sedan packed with eco-friendly technology and zero emissions, which is part of the new Renault Z.E. range. It is the first 100% electric medium sedan created under the Renault Nissan Alliance, using the Renault Fluence as its foundation for this ecological vehicle, which promises zero emissions.

It is easy to distinguish the differences of the Fluence and Fluence Z.E. in terms of exterior and interior designs. On the outside, the Fluence Z.E. has a similar front as seen on the normal Fluence but the rear view is a different shape. On the interior, you should see that the instrumental panel's altered with a different design, which makes it easier to distinguish it. Anyway, it still has the same Fluence comfort you can enjoy taking some time off. The Fluence Z.E. features the world's first Carminat TomTom Z.E. Live navigation system, which allows the driver to check real-time information on the Fluence Z.E. such as battery percentage remaining, eco-routing, search for nearest charging stations, and much more. This electric medium sedan provides user-friendly experience which can be somewhat essential.

The Renault Fluence Z.E. produces 70KW of power output and 226 Nm of torque output. This helps the car goes from 0-100km/h in 13.40 seconds and top speed of 135km/h and the lithium-ion battery's capacity is 22kWh. There is even an energy recovery system that allows the Fluence Z.E. recharges the battery when decelerating or braking. This helps the car's NEDC combined cycle range reaches 185km. There are numerous possibilities to charge the Fluence Z.E. at home and public places thanks to the Wall-Box, household mains supply (10A or 16A, 220V), or access to public battery charging facilities. In some countries like Israel, Denmark and Australia, there is a QuickDrop battery switch system which allows the Fluence Z.E. to swap the battery in as little as 5 minutes.

Two versions are available on the Fluence Z.E. such as Expression and Dynamique and its available in seven color variations such as Beige Cendré, Bleu Energy, Bleu de Prusse, Gris Eclipse, Gris Platine, Noir Nacré, and Blanc Glacier.

My comment:

I guess that the Renault Fluence Z.E. has some of its features courtesy of the Renault Nissan Alliance that keeps its zero emissions promise just like the Nissan Leaf but for now, it would be very nice to see the first of its kind. The first 100% electric medium sedan that uses the Renault Fluence as its foundation to create such a wonderful electric vehicle that provides cleaner driving on the highway. We might say that we're going to mix it up with the colors blue and yellow and oh my gosh, the perspectives are not as thick as an oslo paper.

Latest RSM All New SM7 TV commercial took the idea from the Infiniti M Hybrid TV commercial

Seen here is the latest Korean TV advertisement for the all new Renault Samsung SM7. The latest full model change that is the extended version of the SM5/Renault Latitude and no longer based on the Nissan Teana but packs technology sourced from the Renault Nissan Alliance.

Huh, looks like this whole Renault Nissan Alliance has paid off for this ad because this latest commercial took the idea from the Infiniti M Hybrid (Nissan Fuga Hybrid) TV commercial from the United States, using the motif of rewriting the history books.

See what I mean? Both the RSM All New SM7 and the Infiniti M Hybrid rewrites the history books. The Infiniti M Hybrid rewrites the history of hybrid technology while the RSM All New SM7 rewrites the premium sedan history. Well, Renault Nissan Alliance did it again!

Renault Samsung ALL NEW SM7

European Elegance - these two little words best describe a luxury Asian sedan that has a strikingly impressive European design and keeps it on par with its European competitors. For the Korean subsidiary of the Renault Nissan Alliance, Renault Samsung Motors has just unleashed the full model change of its flagship premium sedan, the SM7.

2012 Renault Samsung SM7

Back in the end of 2004, the Renault Samsung SM7 is released and this flagship sedan is highly based on the first-generation Nissan Teana. It was later gained a minor change in January 2008 under the new name, SM7 NEW ART. The SM7 competes against the likelihood of the Hyundai Genesis and the Ssangyong Chairman W. In the 2011 Seoul Motor Show, RSM previews the SM7's full model change via the SM7 CONCEPT and now, in August 2011, the arrival of the ALL NEW SM7 is here and the "EUROPEAN PRESTIGE" concept makes it more reasonable to fall in love with RSM's flagship sedan that is a part of the Renault Nissan Alliance. Is that count as the model from the planned Nissan Power 88?

For its full model change, the ALL NEW SM7 is no longer based on the Nissan Teana. It uses the extended version of the platform used from the RSM SM5/Renault Latitude executive sedan. The 4-door coupe styling is one of the key points why the concept term "European Prestige" is applied on the all new SM7. The whole details really stayed true to its SM7 Concept counterpart except for the rear view. On the SM7 Concept Car, the rear lamps were shaped like the Aston Martin One-77 but on the production version, it made it more like a Nissan Teana J32. I know that they should have retain the One-77 style rear lamps from the concept version but still it was worth it.

2012 Renault Samsung SM7 interior

At first glance, you might think that the all new interior looks similar to the SM5/Renault Latitude but this is all original. One thing I am particularly aware of is the headrests on the driver and the passenger seats because they look hideous and it looks like a Haven Troopers' helmet. Imagine what would go wrong if we seat on these? There are tons of premium goodies hidden inside the ALL NEW SM7 such as the massager for the driver's seat, heated seats, premium NAPPA leather, adjustable rear seats, Super Vision Cluster, and ambient lighting. Other conveniences include an available DMB navigation system, Climate Control, Soft Diffusion, Perfume Diffuser, Plasma Ionizer, USB connectivity, BOSE Surround Sound System, and loads of extras that will surely come in handy for this European Prestige.

2012 Renault Samsung SM7

The ALL NEW SM7 offers world-class performance needed for the sophisticated driver. It offers in two engine types such as the VQ25 and the VQ35 engine. The VQ25 engine offers 190ps/6,600rpm of power output, 24.8kg*m/4,400rpm, and 11km/L of fuel economy. The VQ35, on the other hand, gets 258ps/6,000rpm of power, 33.7kg*m/4,400rpm of torque, and 9.6km/L of fuel economy. They are both equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Manual Mode plus Paddle Shifters offered for the first time. To add more European Elegance in performance, a Sport Mode is offered for the first time, taking full advantage of the sport-tuned suspension for sports car-like agility.

For the world-class safety, the ALL NEW SM7 is offered with front and side airbags, Bi-Xenon adaptive headlamps, an enhanced bodyframe, Hill Start Assist, disc brakes, and a special system that detects incoming vehicles 50km behind. Cruise Control and Speed Limiter is also included as well.

The wide selection offers the following variants such as the SE (Sensitive Edition), LE (Luxury Edition), RE (Royal Edition), LE35 (Luxury Edition 3.5L) and RE35 (Royal Edition 3.5L). The RE35 is the flagship of its lineup. Available color variations include Glacier White, Ultra Silver, Midnight Blue, Mars Gray, and Pearl Black.

MY COMMENT:

The ALL NEW SM7 rewrites the history of luxury premium sedans forever and now, the ALL NEW SM7 targets the likelihood of the Kia K7, Hyundai 5G Grandeur, and Alpheon. Despite no longer based on the Nissan Teana, the ALL NEW SM7 is loaded of features offered from the Renault Nissan Alliance. For the first time in RSM history, Paddle Shifters are added to provide the exceptional feel of the sports car and with the Sport Mode, the advantages of the sport-tuned suspension will change the way you drive the ALL NEW SM7 forever. It takes a driver with a Noble Heart to master the essentials of the ALL NEW SM7.

The executives in France-tan's clothing: Latitude vs. C5 vs. 508

2011 Renault Latitude

2011 Citroen C5

2011 Peugeot 508

Those three executive medium sedans are from France, hence I called them the executives in France-tan's clothing. Wouldn't believe I used the "France-tan" word? Never mind, the Renault Latitude, Peugeot 508, and the Citroen C5 sedan are executive medium sedans stands out the crowd with its premium quality, performance, comfort, and everything else. The Citroen C5 and Peugeot 508 are made in France but the Renault Latitude is made in South Korea under the name Renault Samsung SM5. Come to think of it, those three are beautiful indeed but time for me to judge which of these French executive medium sedans is my pick...

In terms of overall design: I guess I can make it a three-way tie because all three got the best looks.

In terms of pricing: Let's see, the Renault Latitude Business dCi150 costs 32,500 Euros while the Peugeot 508 Access 1.6L VTi 16v 120ch BMP6 costs 23,300 Euros and the Citroen C5 Berline VTi 120 BMP6 Attraction costs 22,600 Euros, which makes the Citroen C5 the winner because of its affordability.

In terms of fuel efficiency: Since both the Citroen C5 and the Peugeot 508 are offered with the e-HDi Micro-Hybrid technology, they deserved the credit. Better luck next time, Latitude.

In terms of performance: The Renault Latitude takes over. The Renault Latitude's V6 engine has more power than the 2.2L HDi engines offered from the Citroen C5 and the Peugeot 508. It is the only Renault that offers that kind of powerful diesel engine for now.

Renault Samsung QM5 Minor Change

2012 Renault Samsung QM5

It's been a while since the Renault Samsung QM5 debuted since December 2007 but for the 2012 Model Year, the Renault Samsung QM5 received its much awaited minor changed and labeled as "NEW QM5" to meet the demands against its rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson iX, Kia Sprotage R, and Ssangyong Korando C. For a quick refresh, the Renault Samsung QM5 uses the Nissan C Platform that was used by the Nissan Dualis. It was assembled at Busan, South Korea and later exported to other countries as the Renault Koleos. On its latest minor change, the QM5 gained a new face that brings out the star factor within reach. The new front fascia looks elegant and stylish enough for the only crossover on Renault Samsung's lineup.

2012 Renault Samsung QM5 interior

With the front face heavily modified for elegance, the interior of the QM5 is mildly revised to make it a little bit luxurious and slightly premium enough for the customers. For an added premium, BOSE Sound System is added to bring out the best audio experience for the drivers while listening to their favorite music in either radio, USB connectivity, or CD player.

Two engine types are available for the QM5: a L4 2.5 CVTC petrol engine and a diesel-fed, Euro V compliant, L4 2.0 dCi engine. The 2.5L gasoline engine packs 171HP of power, 23.0kg-m of torque, and 11.8km/L of fuel economy thanks to the XTRONIC CVT equipped on it. The 2.0L dCi engine packs 173HP of power, 36.7kg-m of torque, and 15.1km/L of fuel economy when it is equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission while 14.3km/L for the 4WD variant.

My Comment:
The newly refreshed Renault Samsung QM5 keeps its promise to be even more premium thanks to its new face but retains the quality of being the only crossover utility vehicle in Renault Samsung line-up that consists of the medium-sized SM3, executive medium-sized SM5, and the upcoming full model change of the flagship SM7 premium sedan. With its new look, how can the QM5 stand up against the Hyundai Tucson iX, Kia Sportage R, and the Ssangyong Korando C? Time will tell but be patient...
