- The Mayon Volcano is exploding lava last night, sending 34,000 residents scrambling for safety. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the lava flowed as much as 1.2 miles from the cloud-shrouded crater of Mount Mayon, while ash fell on several villages in northeastern Albay province.

- The Securities and Exchange Commission stands firm on its decision to strip Rappler Inc's licenses, citing clear violation to "foreign equity restrictions in mass media." Local and foreign journalist groups, as well as some senators, condemned the corporate securities regulator's move, calling it an obvious attack on press freedom.

- The Senate votes to shut down reforms to federal surveillance laws to ensure the privacy of all Americans. The Senate voted 60-38 this afternoon in favor of cloture to end debate and to prevent any amendments prior to a formal up-down vote on the FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act of 2017. It that could have passed, the US government under Trump administration will massively expand the ability to spy on Americans without a warrant.
