Subaru Levorg (VN5) Layback

With crossovers selling like Hollywood superheroes in movies and TV, the second-generation Subaru Levorg's not safe from the craze either because it now spawned a crossover version called the Layback, the just-sized alternative for those who think the Outback's too big for them.

The Layback, a crossover derivative of the second-generation Levorg estate, is so weirdly named, it looks like it's made for those who are off for this weekend's swim meet because the name rhymes with a particular kind of speedo that swimmers wear during a swim meet.

While the styling is broadly similar to the current Levorg, the swimmer-friendly Layback features a different front view that differentiates it from the normal Levorg as well as the black claddings underneath and added ground clearance to give it a rugged feeling to this sport utility wagon. As for the inside, it still packs the Tesla-esque dashboard, 12.3-inch instrumental cluster, harman/kardon audio system, and seating for five with up to 561 liters of boot space, a hidden compartment, and a hands-free power liftgate, but the Layback is offered with a black-and-ash two-tone upholstery that matches the Layback's outdoor vibes.

While running on the Subaru Global Platform, the Layback feels more like a flyback rather than a racing back even with the SI-DRIVE set to Sport Mode. Still, with the signature Subaru Symmetrical AWD standard, the Layback's prepared to swim with the fishes, metaphorically speaking, from topless to bikini bottom.

Under the hood, the Layback's CB18 1.8L DOHC DIT engine produces 177PS of power and 300Nm of torque. Mated with a Lineartronic CVT, it promises a combined 13.6km/l based on WLTP standards.

With safety the true gold standard for Subaru, the Layback's armed with the latest Eyesight advanced driver-assist technology with Pre-Collision Braking, Autonomous Emergency Steering, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering Function, and Lane Departure Prevention. It even comes with Subaru Starlink which allows the driver to access numerous services such as SOS Emergency Assistance, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision Notification, Maintenance Notifications, Monthly Vehicle Health Report and Diagnostic Alerts, Stolen Vehicle Recovery Service, Vehicle Security Alarm Notification, Remote Lock/Unlock, Remote Horn and Lights and Remote Vehicle Locator.

The Layback starts at 3,993,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, which is cheaper to own than its big brother, the Legacy Outback. So, there you have it. If you're looking for a crossover wagon made by Subaru but the Outback's too big for you, consider the swimmer-friendly Layback your suitable option. Although weirdly named, the Layback's ready to make a splash, and you'd better get your swimming goggles and swim caps on because this Layback's got your flybacks.

Subaru Levorg (VN5)

The Impreza-sized station wagon from Subaru, the Levorg, is now on its second-generation, and with performance is not in its agenda, sadly, the new Levorg promises to be the most technologically-advanced Subaru ever made because of its all-new Eyesight X and Subaru Starlink services. Let's discover more about the second-generation Levorg.

2021 Subaru Levorg

Starting at 3,102,000 Japanese Yen (around $31,020), the all-new Levorg is Subaru's tour de force that aims squarely at the Volvo V60 because of the most advanced safety features Subaru ever made in the hopes to emulate this new model to its more expensive but powerful Swedish opponent.

Starting first with the design and thankfully, the bits and bobs from the prototype as seen in last year's Tokyo Motor Show retains. Compared to the previous model, the new Levorg's design looks clean, sharp, and athletic. Looking from every angle, the new look really spells smart and sexy and its own pace. Even the hood scoop adds a nice touch to it because it's a Subaru and every Subarist in the world knows that.

Step inside the interior and you will be greeted with a Tesla-esque dashboard which scares most speedo boys because of its minimalism. This is the first time a Subaru in a Japanese market spawned a super tall screen and due to a litany of horror stories about tall screens occupying dashboards in most expensive cars, some might fear that the new model embraces minimalism. Don't worry, though, despite the tall screen, there are buttons around for ease of use.

The driver's side is like science fiction came true but on the passenger side, it's surprisingly comfortable to live with. The rear space is surprisingly more generous than the previous model and the boot space is surprisingly adaptable. There's even a secret compartment in case you want more. With such utility, the new Levorg is ready to take on various daily routines, be it for work or for leisure.

Now we get to the very serious topic of this new Levorg and it's about performance. Because it now runs on a Subaru Global Platform, coupled with some other suspension and chassis updates, the new Levorg is now livelier to drive than the previous model, and when in the STi Sport variant with its sport-tuned suspension, it's slightly better to handle with almost none of the drama involved. Toying around with its SI-Drive system is the ideal way of getting to know about the new Levorg in all corners of the earth but the STi Sport variant features more modes than the normal Levorg had, meaning you have everything at your disposal to deliver its first impression on the road.

Speaking of drama, the new Levorg, at launch, is offered only with a brand new CB18 1.8L DOHC DIT engine that produces 177PS of power and 300Nm of torque. Mated with the only gearbox offered on the new Levorg, a Lineartronic CVT, it promises a combined 13.7kmpl based on WLTP standards. Yes, this powertrain really is dramatic and when compared to the Volvo V60, the Swedish will eat it alive on the straights but who cares? They can go up to 180kph, you know, but enough about that because it's time to move on to safety.

The new Levorg is the first Subaru to be applied with the first-ever Eyesight X, which features a wide array of highly advanced safety features such as traffic jam assist, active speed control, and active lane change assist, in addition to its pre-crash brake, unintentional acceleration suppression, active cruise control, and lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive high beam, and driver monitoring system. In addition to the Eyesight X, the new Levorg is the first to have Subaru Starlink which allows the driver to access numerous services such as SOS Emergency Assistance, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision Notification, Maintenance Notifications, Monthly Vehicle Health Report and Diagnostic Alerts, Stolen Vehicle Recovery Service, Vehicle Security Alarm Notification, Remote Lock/Unlock, Remote Horn and Lights and Remote Vehicle Locator.

So, what can I say about the new Levorg? Well, it's not as fast or as powerful as a Volvo but with the sharp new design, new interior, improved handling, and the most advanced tech offered in a Subaru, this is a fresh start and it's starting to gain some attention in the midst of the new normal.

Subaru Levorg and WRX S4 - 2018 minor change

Subaru's Levorg and WRX S4, Japan's cut-price answer to Volvo's V60 and S60, are now updated for the 2018 model year and apart from having slight cosmetic and mechanical changes aside, the 2018MY Levorg and WRX S4 introduced us to Subaru's brand new version of the award-winning Eyesight safety tech.

Before explaining more about Subaru's updated version of the Eyesight safety tech. Let's find out what's new on these two, starting with the outside of these cars as you can see with those redesigned hexagonal-shaped grilles, new front bumpers, and new wheel designs, there is a stark comparison between these two relatives; the Levorg is designed as a comfortable day-to-day car for work and for leisure while the WRX S4 is designed to be as sporty as its hi-po derivative.

On the inside, both the WRX S4 and the Levorg come with the new, larger high-definition multi-function display, as well as the new auto climate control on the dashboard to keep it fresh and accommodating for both of these models. Seats aside, both the WRX S4 and the Levorg feature Ultrasuede, a suede-like artificial leather made by Toray, intertwining bundled ultrafine fibers, giving these interiors a touch of class. It even comes with the driver's seat position memory function that can memorize up to four seating positions, giving occupants a customized seating position comfortable enough for the long journey ahead.

2018 Subaru Levorg

Under the hood, both models do come with the same 300PS 2.0L DIT boxer-four engine mated to a LINEARTRONIC CVT and SI-DRIVE which promises 13.2km/L of fuel efficiency based on JC08 Mode standards and improved driving feel because of the tinkering of the dynamics. In the Levorg, though, it still offers an entry-level 1.6L turbocharged boxer engine with 16.0km/L of fuel efficiency.

Now, we get to the real part of these two updated models in terms of safety, and for the new 2018MY WRX S4 and Levorg comes Eyesight Touring Assist. Improving the safety credentials of their award-winning safety tech, Eyesight Touring Assist operates by using Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Control, and a stereo camera to monitor lane markings as well as vehicles ahead of the car, greatly reducing the driver burden by taking control of acceleration, braking, and steering while traveling on highways. In other words, these can make the WRX S4 and Levorg drive by themselves, which is surprising and awkward among Subarists.

So, now that we get to know about Subaru's new Eyesight Touring Assist, what do you think? Is this tech predicting the future of Subarus or it means something more? Whatever it is, new tech aside, the new WRX S4 and the new Levorg are trying to play "top trumps" against Volvo's S60 and V60, although even with the upgrades, these Volvo's can still mince these two because of the performance in terms of pricing, especially when the Levorg starts at 2,829,600 Japanese Yen and the WRX S4 starts at 3,369,600 Yen, they're great value for money for a change. So there you have it, with these new tech and features, both these new Subaru models may never make the grade against its Volvo rivals due to their performance but when it comes to getting ready in today's traffic conditions, their new Eyesight Touring Assist is right here when they need it the most.

Subaru LEVORG (VM)

This is probably one of the most ideal cars to drive when you woke up at 3 o'clock in the morning and go out for an early cruise round the town. Sure, you have the roads with you at the time but in this new model I'll be tackling about, think of it like you're going away from your house in the suburbs, then travel round town until you reached your granny's house, which is about a few miles from a historic site. How lucky this scenario would be especially the car you were driving is an estate available only in Japan.

2015 Subaru LEVORG

This is the LEVORG and even though it has a very weird name, Subaru claims that this is a Real Sports Tourer as said in their advertising but come on, even though it's a sports tourer which is the size of the outgoing Legacy Touring Wagon, which will be phased out this year, I don't really hold much hope even though it's not going to be offered worldwide because it's available exclusively to the Japanese market.

Sure, it was similarly sized to the Legacy Touring Wagon but unlike the Legacy Touring Wagon, the LEVORG looks clean in the exterior design department and it looks handsome as well. The bonnet scoop adds a nice touch because what's underneath it are one of two DIT engines which I'll talk about it later but anyway, because it looks more like a European sports tourer, there's nothing to criticize about how the LEVORG looks and as for the interior...

2015 Subaru LEVORG interior

It's all typical Subaru interior in here but when fully equipped, you get the same experience that you felt from watching a very erotic Danish commercial. While taking an early morning cruise on a Tokyo highway, the LEVORG really soothes my mind and I don't need to worry a single thing or two because it's a very comfortable ride because it's as well-lubricated as a jar of Vaseline.

It's the first to offer Eyesight Ver. 3, which is the new and improved version of Subaru's very own pre-crash safety system. For Version 3, it integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. If you have any doubts, handle this stuff with care.

So, on the city highways, the LEVORG is brilliant because of its comfort zone and the clever suspension setup that makes this tourer feel like in a different league but as dawn reaches and the open roads are in reach, the LEVORG starts to unravel.

2015 Subaru LEVORG

The LEVORG comes with two turbocharged petrol engines available and because they're turbocharged, you can expect them to be somewhat fun to drive but this car's no fool, though because even with the turbocharged engines, the only transmission available is a LINEARTRONIC CVT gearbox but different engine types offer different settings on the CVT gearbox. First, there's the FB16 DIT engine which develops a modest 170PS of power output and with the fuel economy of 17.4 km/liter (JC08 mode), it's quite okay to drive for a little bit longer and models rigged with the 1.6L DIT engine have two modes in the SI-DRIVE, determining the best gear control for fuel efficiency and driving enjoyment.

Then, there's the top of the line FA20 DIT engine which develops an impressive 300PS of power output and 400Nm of torque. With models using this high-performance engine, there's a S# in the SI-DRIVE and when set, drivers can take advantage to its paddle shifters and shift from one to eight. Eight simulated gears, eh? That's enough fake moving mechanisms that will keep the LEVORG longing for days but better still, this SPORT LINEARTRONIC makes this CVT gearbox more responsive than any other CVT gearboxes and can be taken lightly.

Couple that with a new chassis as well as Subaru's legendary SYMMETRICAL AWD system, the LEVORG really is a sports tourer well-lubricated for the road ahead and oh, in the speed bumps, there's a bit of worry in here but that's fine because you get the little feeling that you were an angry yobo driving a Subie wagon on the roads of Africa. Yes, I just said that but that's the way Subarus are meant to be, they can take on any terrain no matter how bad they can be.

2015 Subaru LEVORG

If I have any doubts about the LEVORG, I would say that the interior's a bit too stale, the CVT gearbox is not a fit for a turbo engine (if you're a Subarist), and the biggest problem to this care is the price and with prices start at around 2,667,600 JPY (estimated $27,000) it's pricier than its rival tourer from Toyota, the Avensis but unlike the Avensis, the Subaru LEVORG is much more enjoyable to drive because of the turbocharged engine and it has all the right elements that a good sports tourer should be; being agile in the corners while maintaining the ability of being a family car or a company car. You can even use it to drive at the shops as well and take advantage to its bigger boot.

It might have a silly name but the LEVORG is definitely a serious daily driver's car for the serious drivers. Despite being a serious machine, the LEVORG can be taken lightly with care and I just want one of those in my whole life.
