Genesis GV80 (2024MY Minor Change) & GV80 Coupe

The first SUV from Genesis, the GV80, has gained a minor change for the 2024 model year and the latest minor change brings an additional model to the range; the first-ever GV80 Coupe. So, what's it all about the GV80 minor change?

Starting at 69,300,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, the GV80 minor change and the first-ever GV80 Coupe bring the first Genesis SUV to near ascension with its revised looks, interior, and performance you would expect for Korea's answer to the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. There's more to expect from this latest facelift.

Beginning with the styling, the GV80 looks sleek and sporty with its new front design, new wheel designs, and a refined rear view, keeping it fresh after three years of service. The Coupe version, meanwhile, looks pretty much the same as the normal GV80 but with a sloping roofline mimicking its German opposition. That roofline means less space compared to the normal GV80 by about 91 liters with the second-row seats present but that's more stuff to store compared to the BMW X6 and the Mercedes GLE Coupe.

The interior of the GV80 has been heavily revamped for this minor change, meaning the dashboard has been heavily reorganized to make room for the 27-inch OLED display where the instrumental cluster and the sat-nav join forces rather than working in separate ways. In addition, it even comes with a digital rear-view mirror, a built-in camera that is handy for spotting some sweet potatoes on the road, and an integrated controller which is rather complicated to use compared to touch screens.

The normal GV80 is offered with a choice of being a five-seater, a six-seater, and a seven-seater while the GV80 Coupe is offered only as a five-seater. It even comes with an available rear-seat entertainment system to keep your bosses in the second-row seats occupied while on the move or getting stuck in traffic.

The GV80 2024MY minor change features an all-petrol lineup consisting of a Smartstream G2.5T engine sourced from today's Hyundai Santa Fe MX5, producing 304PS of power and 43kgf-m of torque, and the ultra-powerful Smartstream G3.5L V6 turbo engine producing 380PS of power and 54kg-m of torque. Exclusive to the GV80 is the Smartstream G3.5L V6 turbo engine with a 48V electric supercharger producing 415PS of power and 56kgf-m of torque. All are mated to an 8-speed automatic.

Like the pre-facelifted model, the GV80 is rear-wheel drive as standard with an optional all-wheel drive system that works on all road conditions; be it tarmac, gravel, or snow. It even comes with an electronically controlled suspension with road preview, which allows the GV80 to recognize road conditions via the front camera. Although they're bulky to drive, these models behave just like the German opposition, nearly.

The facelifted GV80 is fully prepared with the most advanced safety features offered in its class such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with the additional Evasis Steering Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assistance, Highway Driving Assist 2, Navigation-Based Smart Cruise Control, Surround View Monitor, Rear Parking Collision Avoidance Assist, and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

The facelifted Genesis GV80 and the first-ever GV80 Coupe promises to become the alpha of the Genesis lineup since its advent three years ago. Although it may be easily overshadowed by the Germans, this updated version promises to propagate itself into presence until it is fully recognized the world over. Be prepared.

Genesis G70 Shooting Brake

The Genesis G70 served as Korea's 3-Series fighter that tries hard to upset the established competition with its unique performance, styling, comfort, and technology. For the first time in Genesis history, the G70 spawned a five-door Shooting Brake variant for those who need more room in the back for more while offering the same driving experience as the sedan.

2022 Genesis G70 Shooting Brake
2022 Genesis G70 Shooting Brake

Although it was originally meant to be exclusive to the European market, it seems the Koreans wanted a shooting brake version of the G70 and looks like they're in luck because they can now buy one at the starting price of 43,900,000 Korean Won plus additional costs.

At first glance, it looks and feels like normal G70 judging from the signature Genesis design, the minimalist interior design, and seating for five people, but because this is the Shooting Brake, the hatchback proportions gave this G70 more space than the sedan version, meaning you can expect up to 465-litres of boot space with the rear seats present and up to 1,535-litres with the rear seats folded down. The added boot space means business and business is good for the G70 Shooting Brake.

Unlike the sedan version, the G70 Shooting Brake is offered only with the 2.0L Turbo GDi engine with 252PS of power output while mated to an 8-speed AT. Fuel economy is a combined 10.4km/L for FR variants and 9.7km/L for 4WD variants.

In terms of handling, the Shooting Brake behaves just like the sedan version, which is a good thing full-stop. With its front MacPherson struts, rear multilink suspension, electronically controlled adaptive dampers, Electronic Power Assisted Steering, and a mechanical LSD, the G70 Shooting Brake delivers dynamics reminiscent of European imports. Although it was meant to be driven on European roads, driving one from the streets of Seoul to the corners of Inje Speedium wasn't half bad at all. Above all, it's Korean through and through and it loves to be taken dramatically.

Like the sedan version, the G70 Shooting Brake puts safety as its top priority with its array of ADAS technology such as Smart Cruise Control, Highway Driving Assist, Lane Follow Assist, Highway Driving Assist, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and more.

Despite being offered with only one engine, the G70 Shooting Brake delivers the same driving experience as the sedan version but with the added rear space for everyday situations. Europeans got their taste of it and now, the Koreans are ready to have a go with it, unless they have to think twice about which G70 they should drive.

My GT7 Log: Born To Move

Despite criticisms and opposition, it appears that the luxury brand of the Hyundai Motor Group, Genesis, found its way home to the world of Gran Turismo via this latest installment, Gran Turismo 7. This car is one of them.

Front face resembling the Genesis logo, twin lines, distinctive styling, that's a Genesis alright but what Genesis is this? If your answer is the G70, then you are right but it's not just a G70...

...this is the latest version. By shock, the Genesis G70 joined the ranks of Gran Turismo exclusives such as the Toyota GR Yaris, meaning only a game like Gran Turismo 7 will allow players to taste the Korean luxury midsize sedan that is "born to move" in all the right places.

Launched in September 2017, the G70 is the baby of the Genesis sedan range and it runs on the same bits and bobs from the Kia Stinger. It is powered by either a 2.2L CRDi-VGT engine with 202PS of power output, a 2.0L Turbo GDi engine with 255PS of power output, and a 3.3L Turbo V6 engine producing 370PS of power and 52kgf-m of torque. All are mated to an 8-speed AT.

Seen here is the 3.3T variant with HTRAC all-wheel drive along with other features such as launch control, rack-mounted motor-driven power steering, dynamic torque vectoring system, and mechanical limited-slip differential.

I was in deep shock learning that the Genesis G70 found its way into Gran Turismo 7 as a Gran Turismo exclusive vehicle, causing a stir the world over. Whatever the reason, I took a deep dive over the G70's dynamics, and for a luxury Korean vehicle, it's downright impressive to drive. It can be clinically mild due to its AWD layout but it can be somewhat menacing to drive, meaning it has the right balance between pristine and lunacy, like quail eggs and cheese mixed into the super spicy noodles. Tasty.

To test this notion, I went back to Laguna Seca to do some experimenting with the G70. I'm pretty sure the G70 likes to be taken out for a track day just to experience what's like to be in what is known the be the Korean 3-Series fighter. Anyway, let's roll the tape.

After a quick lap, the G70 did it in 1:48.255, which is rather impressive for a Korean luxury midsize sedan almost possessing the levels of expensive German imports.

Is the G70 deserve some love or hate now that it's certified a Gran Turismo exclusive vehicle? You'll have to try it first before you had the final say.

The Genesis G70. Born to move. Now, born to be a Gran Turismo exclusive vehicle.

Genesis Electrified GV70

Launched at the end of 2020, the GV70 is the second SUV in the Genesis lineup and despite its weirdness that puts speedo boys out cold, is surprisingly an enjoyable luxury crossover to drive on a daily basis. With the arrival of the Electrified variant, the GV70 is joining the electrification bandwagon following the success of the Electrified G80 sedan and the all-original EV, the GV60.

2023 Genesis Electrified GV70
2023 Genesis Electrified GV70

Priced at 78,090,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, the Electrified GV70, as the name implies, is the electric version of the GV70 crossover that was launched at the end of 2020. Its potential rivals are the BMW iX3 and the Audi e-tron as expected.

For an average car enthusiast, it looks nearly identical to the normal GV70. The sharp front view, the awkward side profile and the rear view, the buttonless dashboard inside, and seating for five people. For the Electrified GV70, however, the faux grille in the front with the hidden compartment where you will plug your charger in is what differentiates it from the normal GV70.

Offered exclusively in 4WD configuration, the Electrified GV70's electric powertrain features two electric motors each generating 160kw of power and 350Nm of torque. Combined and when engaged in Boost Mode, it generates a total power output of 360kw of power and 700Nm of torque, making it capable of hitting 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds, as quick as a German saloon. As for the range, it's good for 400km, enough to cover a trip from Seoul to Busan with some leftovers to tackle through Busan landmarks.

As for charging times, the Electrified GV70's 350kw rapid charging capability enables its Li-ion batteries to charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes when plugged into a public charging station, although charging times may vary depending on location.

Despite bearing the bulk of its electric powertrain, the Electrified GV70 is surprisingly good to drive because of its highly sophisticated suspension setup underneath, not to mention the application of the Pre-view ECS for an optimized driving experience.

It even comes with a signature e-Terrain Mode which makes this crossover stable to drive in various driving conditions, say tarmac, gravel, or snow. Although I cannot guarantee if this will work with your picnic with Hannibal.

The arrival of the Electrified GV70 is another clear sign that Genesis's electrification plot is building up.

Genesis G90 (RS4)

When the Genesis luxury brand from Hyundai Motor Group was launched in 2015, the EQ900 was the maiden vehicle of their newly established luxury brand until it was replaced by the G90 in 2018. Nearly a decade has passed and the Genesis brand is becoming the rising star that competes against the German top dogs. Now, the Genesis luxury car that started it all is now redefined for this decade as the G90 enters its second generation.

2023 Genesis G90
2023 Genesis G90

Priced at 91,000,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, the all-new Genesis G90 is a bold new take on the first car of the Genesis brand that promises to pick where its predecessor left off and looks like it's on a bold jumpstart. With its new platform, new design, new technology, and new performance, the all-new G90 rewrites the rules of what Korean luxury cars are made for and looks like it has the whole world on notice.

Beginning with the design, the all-new G90 looks slimmer and sharper compared to its predecessor, which is a great thing until the rearview slightly spoils the athletic looks of this new model. Like today's Genesis models, the all-new G90 incorporates signature Genesis elements such as the front face heavily inspired by the Genesis logo. Although it's controversially massive for a luxury car a la BMW 7-Series, it still boasts some swagger while driving at Gangnam like a true professional.

2023 Genesis G90 interior

Inside, the all-new G90 delivers what to expect on a high-end luxury premium sedan made in Korea. On the driver's side, you will be greeted by its next-generation infotainment system provided by its massive panel with two screens; one for the instrumental cluster and the other for its infotainment system that can be controlled via a knob rather than a touchscreen. Below, there are climate control switches for when you want to adjust its room temperature, be it hot or cool. And lastly, the rear seat armrest storage box features a UV sterilization function which kills 99.9% of germs within 10 minutes. Believe it or not, the new model comes with a fingerprint authentication system similar to the new Toyota Land Cruiser, not to mention the Digital Key 2 service which allows users to get inside without the help of a car key as long as the smartphone equipped with it is nearby.

2023 Genesis G90
2023 Genesis G90

Being a chauffeur-driven machine made to cater to the elite, the rear space is where the G90 shines and because it never runs short on concessions of comfort, not to mention the added legroom for the Long Wheelbase variant, you'll find that the new model is so much more comfortable than its predecessor, giving you the "out on a limo" feeling you might brag about to almost everyone.

Unlike the previous model, the all-new G90 is offered only with the turbocharged 3.5L engine that produces 380PS of power and 54kgf-m of torque while mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox operated via an Electronic Shift Dial. The LWB variant features a 48V electric supercharger bolted to the said engine but more with that later on.

Because it now runs on a new platform, the all-new G90 feels more dramatic and classier to drive compared to its predecessor, even when you set it to Sport Mode for its agile style approach. Combined with its Active RWS, multi-chamber air suspension, and optional AWD system and you got yourself a luxury premium sedan capable of handling all kinds of road situations. As for the Brake Mode, there's one mode that will have you noticed and that's Chauffeur Mode. Set it and it delivers a more comfortable braking feel without spilling someone else's soda while on a relaxing trip to Tagaytay.

In tune with the times, the all-new G90 boasts a wide array of safety tech such as the Direct Grip Detection System, Highway Driving Assist 2, navigation-based smart cruise control, forward collision-avoidance assist, rear-side collision avoidance assist, rearview monitor, Lane Departure Prevention Assist, Lane Mantinenance Assistance, intelligent headlamp, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, reverse guide lamp, Remote Smart Parking Assist, surround-view monitor, safe exit assist, parking collision prevention assist, and 10 airbags.

The all-new G90 is now prepared to continue the Genesis legacy that started nearly a decade ago with its new and interesting ways to impress connoisseurs and sommeliers of the motoring world with its design, performance, and technology. This is the tour de force the Koreans have unleashed on the world stage and looks like this new model is on a roll.

Available colors: Uyuni White, Seville Silver, Makalu Gray, Vik Black, Maui Black, Hallasan Green, Capri Blue, Tasman Blue, Valencia Gold, Bariloche Brown, Verbier White (Matte), and Makalu Gray (Matte).

Genesis GV60

The arrival of the first electric Genesis, the Electrified G80, is only a prologue to Genesis' road to electrification. In fact, they have just gotten started. This is the true beginning of Genesis' electrified vision; an electric crossover that promises the same dynamics as expected for a Genesis, it's called the GV60.

2022 Genesis GV60

With prices starting at 63,793,499 Korean Won plus additional costs, the first-ever GV60 electric crossover promises dynamics that you would expect for a Genesis in a compact crossover sizing and electric drivetrain that reflects on the new normal, whatever the reason.

2022 Genesis GV60

As the naming implies, the GV60 is surprisingly the smallest of the Genesis crossover range but it's wider and taller compared to the G70. As for the design, the GV60 looks more like a Kia EV6 with the face of the Citroen C3 Aircross, which is outlandish for a luxury crossover of this size. Whatever the reason, a car with no grille is better than a car with monster grilles. I'm talking to you, BMW.

2022 Genesis GV60

Speaking of the interior, the GV60 is not what you called a spacious crossover, but it's almost as spacious as the Tesla Model Y, which is its main rival. Like the Model Y, the GV60's interior adapts to the minimalist lifestyle, which spells bad news for speedo boys behind the wheel. Touch screen, am I right? Anyway, as speedo boys are lamenting about the GV60's dashboard because of the touch screen minus the buttons, it comes with a signature feature that is more of a show-off to some; the Crystal Sphere. This flashy, crystal-like object turns into a rotary gear selector if it's ready on the move. Quite an accessory, I dare say.

What's also showy on the GV60 is the addition of the digital side mirrors similar to the ones used on the Lexus ES and the Honda e. It uses cameras and OLED monitors in place of traditional side mirrors, giving them a clear and wide rear view angle.

The touch screen is the least of the speedo boys' problems because the GV60 poses the biggest problems of all; facial recognition system and fingerprint authentication system. While such features are done to prevent the bad case of Grand Theft Auto, it will become problematic if it's pre-owned. It's like the one Gamertag per account rule and if you make a mistake, there's no turning back.

As told, the GV60 is almost as spacious as a Tesla Model Y in terms of passenger comfort and boot space, and although it is small for electric crossover standards, it's still sensible enough to accommodate up to five people and carry heaps of stuff for work or for another courtesy visit to the relatives.

2022 Genesis GV60

Now, let's talk about performance. In its default rear-wheel-drive layout, the GV60's electric motor produces 168kW of power, 350Nm of torque, and a range of 451km in one full charge. Add another electric motor to the front, it will become AWD and it will churn out a total of 234kW of power and 605Nm of torque but the range is cut to 400km.

Opted for the Performance AWD powertrain, which is the equivalent to the one seen on the Kia EV6 GT, it comes with the Boost Mode located at the steering wheel. Push it on and you'll have 360kW of power and 700Nm of torque at your disposal. You can also engage the secret Drift Mode to give the GV60 the dynamics of a rear-wheel-drive car you can't get enough of. Cheesy for a crossover but it's worth trying out.

Coupled with the e-LSD, Active Road Noise Control, Regenerative Braking Control Paddle Shift, and the Preview Electronically Controlled Suspension, the GV60 is all about adapting itself through the roads of the new normal. Rear-wheel-drive alone, it's a good car to drive on the streets, but if it's AWD, it's good on almost everywhere, especially when you take it to the track with the Drift Mode on. Again, cheesy.

The Digital Side Mirror mentioned above is one of the many safety techs offered in this crossover. The GV60 features Highway Driving Assist 2 with Lane Change Assist Control, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear-Side Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear side Monitor, Multiple Anti-Collision Automatic Braking System, Reverse Guide Lamp, Intelligent Headlamp, Safe Exit Assist, Advanced Rear Seat Passenger Notification, and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

Whether you like it or not, for tech or for performance, for ecology or for pleasure, the GV60 is all about being the best of both worlds and you should give credit to the Koreans behind this curiosity.

Genesis Electrified G80

Last year, the second-generation Genesis G80 has been unveiled amidst the early days of the pandemic and it became the second to brace Genesis's brand revival first done by its first SUV, the GV80. With the second-generation G80 nicked the Korean Car of the Year award, the time has come for the second-generation G80 to become the lab rat for Genesis's first step towards electrification.

2022 Genesis Electrified G80

This is Genesis's first electric vehicle called the Electrified G80. Priced at an outrageously expensive 88,190,000 Korean Won plus additional costs, the Electrified G80 is the start of Genesis' electrification offense that you can expect in the coming year or two because electrification is slowly becoming a predominant trend in the motoring world in the name of reducing carbon footprint.

How does the Electrified G80 differ from its ICE-powered equivalent in terms of design? For starters, you can expect similar styling from its ICE-powered equivalent such as the Genesis signature look where the front face resembles the Genesis logo as well as the rearview that carries the rear lamps also similar to the logo as well, not to mention the fake side vents that are basically indicators. The Electrified G80 features a different front bumper design that is too much to bear for those with trypophobia while the front grille's closed and on its right, you will see the letter G on it, indicating this is where you'll plug the charger in it.

On the interior, it still functions like the normal G80 except that it comes with additional features made specifically for this vehicle and in terms of quality, in the name of ecology, it uses various natural and recycled materials in its interior as well as an eco-friendly forged wood garnish made from recycled pieces of wood.

The Electrified G80's electric motor is connected to an 87.2kWh battery pack, producing 272kw of power and 700Nm of torque. It does 0-100kph in 4.9 seconds and it has a driving range of 427km. In terms of charging, the Electrified G80's battery power can be replenished from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes on a 350kw rapid charging station.

It's available only with the e-AWD drivetrain with the Disconnector Actuator System that allows the Electrified G80 to behave in either a rear-wheel-drive car or a four-wheel-drive car depending on various situations where it is needed most.

Although bulkier to drive than the normal G80, it's still as quiet, as comfortable, and as safe as most luxury electrics should because of its Active Noise Control-Road, Preview Electronic Control Suspension, and numerous safety techs such as Highway Driving Assist II, Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning, Pre-active Safety Seat, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, among many others.

With the Electrified G80, Genesis's electrification offense has just begun, and looks like we can expect more from them in the coming months, but in the meantime, drivers are prepared to experience Genesis's first electric luxury car that will surely become a driving force to be reckoned with, well, almost.

A quick five-year recap on Genesis

It's been five years since the Hyundai Motor Company launched the Genesis luxury brand in their bid to compete against the best of Europe. From the very first Genesis car, the EQ900, all the way to the brand's second luxury SUV, the GV70, here is the five-year recap on Project Genesis.

EQ900 (2015) - The Genesis brand was launched in 2015 with its first model, a flagship sedan called the EQ900. Served as the replacement for the Hyundai Equus, the EQ900 focuses on the brand's "Human-Centered Luxury" philosophy, delivering cutting-edge technology and a more lively driving feel to indulge with. It is offered in three different engine choices ranging from V6 3.3-liter T-GDI (370PS); V6 3.8-liter GDI (315PS); or V8 5.0-liter GDI (425PS), all mated with an 8-speed automatic with lock-up torque converter.

2016 Genesis EQ900

New York Concept (2016) - The New York Concept is Genesis brand's first concept car showcased at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. It previews the brand's future design approach.

G80 (2016) - What used to be the second-generation Hyundai Genesis, was renamed the Genesis G80. Launched in the summer of 2016, the G80's styling is more of a refined version of the old Hyundai Genesis, which was used to be called. Under the hood, the G80 still offers two V6 petrol engines available such as the V6 3.3 Lambda and the V6 3.8 Lambda engine. By autumn, the G80 Sport is offered, packed with the similar 3.3L V6 T-GDi engine from the EQ900, which produces 370PS of power output. They're both mated with a revised 8-speed automatic transmission with a lock-up torque converter.

2017 Genesis G80

GV80 Concept (2017) - Showcased at the 2017 New York International Auto Show, the GV80 Concept previews the brand's first SUV, which became a reality three years later.

G70 (2017) - The G70 is the baby of the Genesis sedan range and it runs on the same bits and bobs from the Kia Stinger. This car was launched in 2017 and gained a big minor change three years later.

2021 Genesis G70

Essentia Concept (2018) - Showcased at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, the Essentia Concept is a two-door electric sportscar that previews the new face of the Genesis brand.

G90 (2018) - The Genesis that started it all, the EQ900, is replaced by the G90 in 2018, which is basically a heavily updated version of the car it replaces. While it now dons the Essentia-style nose, not to mention the most dramatic styling in a Korean luxury car, the inside of the G90 remains the same as the outgoing EQ900 as are the choice of engines.

2019 Genesis G90

Mint Concept (2019) - Showcased at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the Mint Concept is a tiny luxury hatchback that showcases the future of mobility the Genesis way.

GV80 (2020) - Genesis started the year 2020 with the first-ever SUV called the GV80. A bold take on the ever-popular German luxury crossovers of its size such as the BMW X5, the Audi Q7, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE. It is the first to incorporate the new Genesis look inspired by the logo.

2021 Genesis GV80

G80 (2020) - In the midst of the full-blown pandemic that swept the world like a tsunami, the second-generation Genesis G80 was launched in March and it is the second Genesis to don its new signature look first derived from the GV80. It is the most technologically-advanced G80 ever made and the most enjoyable to drive thanks to its three all-new engines starting from the brand new turbocharged 2.5L engine producing 304PS of power and 43kg-m of torque, the brand new turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine producing 380PS of power and 54kg-m of torque, and the new 2.2L diesel engine producing 210PS of power and 45kg-m of torque. All are mated to an 8-speed automatic.

2021 Genesis G80

GV70 (2020) - Launched in December 2020, the GV70 is the second SUV from Genesis and it's the first vehicle to come with biometrics for added security. Under the hood, the GV70 offers a choice of engines ranging from the 2.2L diesel, the 304PS Smartstream G 2.5T engine, and the range-topping 3.5L V6 turbo engine with 380PS of power. All of these engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic.

2021 Genesis GV70

Here's to five more years of the Genesis brand and we can expect more new models coming up with electric Genesis cars on the horizon.

Genesis GV70

Genesis started the year 2020 with their first SUV called the GV80 and now, they're ending the year with their second SUV that targets the likes of the big names like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, or the Mercedes GLC-Class. It's called the GV70 and as forewarned, their newest midsize luxury SUV, combined with its big brother GV80, will generate record sales for the Korean luxury brand. So, let's have our ex and whys about the GV70.

2021 Genesis GV70

2021 Genesis GV70

The GV70, priced at 48,800,000 Korean Won (around $49,000), is the second SUV from Genesis and you can think of it as the baby brother of the GV80 that you saw last January but unlike the GV80, this luxury midsize SUV is the most cutting-edge vehicle you can expect from the land of K-dramas, K-pops, and kimchis. Such excitement but don't get too excited just yet because it's time to do some little detective work.

Starting with the design, the GV70 is like a jacked-up version of the G70, the Korean 3-Series rival that recently gained its big minor change a few months ago, judging from its front view that looks like it came from the G70. Although the front view is sharp looking like every Genesis should, the side and the rear view somewhat spoils its attention to detail, giving an impression of a sharp-dressed hunchback bodyguard, metaphorically speaking. Slap it with the Sport Package and it points to the west of weird, which is rather odd for luxury crossover standards but this is how modern-day cars look nowadays.

2021 Genesis GV70 interior

On the interior, the GV70 is minimalist in every way, which means bad news for speedo boys because of almost everything in the dashboard's buttonless. Still, could be worse, because, with all of the technology loaded in it, the GV70 is the first car to come with biometrics for added security and convenience. Yes, we are familiar with the biometric stuff in our smartphones and other stuff but putting biometrics in a car is mind-blowingly nervous for anyone unfamiliar with it. Anyway, enough about the tech stuff because as a five-seater crossover with some ample rear space, comfortable seats, and decent boot space fit for whatever they can throw at it, not to mention the sweet spot, of course, the GV70 is a multipurpose luxury crossover that works wonders at any time.

2021 Genesis GV70

Under the hood, the GV70 offers a choice of engines ranging from the 2.2L diesel, the 304PS Smartstream G 2.5T engine, and the range-topping 3.5L V6 turbo engine with 380PS of power. All of these engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic. The 2.2L diesel and the 2.5T can be either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive but the 3.5T V6 turbo variant is only offered with all-wheel drive.

For a midsize luxury crossover, the GV70 is surprisingly Genesis in every which way it goes because of its enhanced body frame structure, sporty suspension setup, rear-wheel-drive-based platform derived from every Genesis vehicle in the range, brakes, and various driving modes that fit through almost any situation. Aside from that, the four-wheel-drive variant's Multi-Terrain Control really works through tarmac, gravel, and snow, well almost, and the Sport Package's addition of Sport Plus in the driving mode, as well as e-LSD, really shows its flashy side of driving. Put them all together and the GV70 really proves its worth as an all-around performer that deserves to be taken seriously through all walks of life.

Being the most cutting-edge crossover made in South Korea, the GV70 offers the most advanced driving aids such as Highway Driving Assist II, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and Advanced Rear Occupant Alert, among many others.

Most speedo boys can get easily bothered by the GV70 because 1) it's a crossover, 2) there's a lot of techs that got speedo boys running scared, and 3) minimalist interior. Despite all the weirdness, the GV70 is surprisingly an enjoyable luxury crossover to drive on a daily basis and whether it can be used for family purposes or for VIP work with the clients around you, consider the GV70 your next vehicle to drive. Looking forward to your responses about the GV70.

Kia Stinger VS Genesis G70 (2021 minor change)

Two Korean premium midsize sedans, the Kia Stinger and the Genesis G70 gained some minor changes for the 2021 model year and with the former taking a more conservative approach, the latter goes for a more heavy approach to its minor change. What's up with their latest minor change?

2021 Kia Stinger

Let's begin with the Kia Stinger. When it was launched three years ago, this sports saloon caught the attention of horsepower-hungry, phone-flipping, speedo boys who can't wait to enjoy its dynamic character and its newfound street cred. Despite its popularity, there were only a few who are buying it, which is rather sad. While the Stinger's fate is in the balance, this minor change feels like it doesn't help because of its same looks, or is it?

On the styling side, the minor change features the same front as the old Stinger but with some new headlamps to differentiate it. Then, there is a new set of wheels to make a clear statement about it. And on the rearview, the Stinger gained new rear lamps, which sums up really well.

On the inside, you will notice that the sat-nav is now longer than the old one, gained blue accents on the trim, and ambient lighting, and sports new and premium seats to make it look luxurious. These interior updates made the Stinger feel more luxurious, which is somewhat contrasting.

2021 Kia Stinger

The recent minor change made the Stinger look mature but it feels as fun to drive as the previous one especially when there are big changes under the hood. In the list of engines, the 2.0L turbo, and 2.2 diesel have been thrown away for good and while it retains the top-of-the-line 3.3L Turbo V6 engine, now producing up to 373PS of power, the facelift welcomes the Smartstream 2.5L turbo engine first appeared in the latest Genesis G80, producing 304PS of power and 43kg-m of torque. Both of these engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

While it behaves like the old Stinger thanks to its sport-tuned suspension, available AWD with Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control, and Brembo brakes, the facelifted Stinger has a load of safety tech that feels like it's in charge of driving.

Price? 38,530,000 Korean Won, which sounds more costly than the old but amazingly, it's less expensive than the Genesis G70 that I'm showing it to you right now.

2021 Genesis G70

The 40,350,000 Won Genesis G70 boasts a big minor change, which sounds like a heavy approach compared to the Stinger's because the new model now sports the signature Genesis look first debuted on the GV80 SUV last January. With that new look, the G70 is starting to look and feel like a different car compared to expensive European imports.

2021 Genesis G70 interior

The interior looks the same as the old one except for the sat-nav, which is now longer than the previous one, and now boasts tons of tech stuff including the rather handy built-in dash cam, which is great for spotting sweet potatoes on the road, if you know what I mean, and humiliate them on social media when you come home.

2021 Genesis G70

Unlike the Stinger, the G70 retains most of its engine lineup consisting of the 2.2L CRDi-VGT engine with 202PS of power output, the 2.0L Turbo GDi engine with 255PS of power output, and the 3.3L Turbo V6 engine producing 370PS of power and 52kgf-m of torque. All are mated to an 8-speed AT.

What's surprising is that the new G70 boasts a new "Sports+" drive mode which lets its engine and gearbox loose to get the most out of it and in the high-end 3.3L V6 with Sports Package, it features a flashy Variable Exhaust Valve System which makes it sounds more frisky. Couple that with its sport-tuned suspension and available Dynamic AWD system and the result is a rather enjoyable Korean luxury car that can be driven harder and longer.

On the safety side, the new G70 boasts a wide array of safety techs such as Forward Collision-Avoidance, Blind-spot Collision Avoidance, Safe Exit Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance, Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control, Lane Following Assist, Multi Collision Brake, Rear Occupant Alert, and so on.

These updated Korean luxury midsize sedans may feel different but they're worth the try so, which one will you go for?

Genesis G80 (RG3)

Back in the start of 2008, Hyundai launched a luxury premium sedan called the Genesis, their first rear-wheel-drive premium sedan, and it was pointed squarely at the Germans with its luxurious offerings in not-so-luxurious pricing. In 2013, it was given a full-model change and it made even better than before. Three years later, with Genesis now a luxury brand of the Hyundai Motor Group, we bid farewell to the Hyundai Genesis but its looks lived on as the Genesis G80. Fast forward to the present, the G80 gained its first full model change as a Genesis and as part of the brand revision which began with the GV80 crossover.

2021 Genesis G80

Starting at 52.91 million Korean Won (around US$46,000), the all-new G80 pushes the envelope further with its new Genesis signature styling introduced on the GV80 last January, new interior, new performance, and new tech, making the competition very nervous to see the new rich kid on the block trying to get a standing ovation from the superiors.

2021 Genesis G80

Before explaining what's what about the new G80, let's observe the design flow and because it carries the new Genesis signature look from the GV80 crossover, you can expect the front face that resembles the Genesis logo as well as the rearview that carries the rear lamps also similar to the logo as well. Speaking of the fake air vents, they're not vents you know. They're indicators and they lit rather well, which is a bit of a show-off for the new G80 if I'm honest.

2021 Genesis G80 interior

2021 Genesis G80 interior

On the inside job, the people that designed it has done a pretty good job creating a brand new interior that works not just as an executive office on wheels but also has plenty of space in the back for the clienteles who are busy with their business ordeals. On the driver's side, you are greeted by its weird-looking steering wheel, fancy instrumental panel, a long sat-nav monitor like you get from a BMW, a climate control, and two knobs; one for controlling the sat-nav and the other one for selecting gears, which is nuts for a car like this. Minimalist as it sounds, yes, and looks like speedo boys are in for a shock when they toy around with its dashboard.

On the passenger side, the new G80 is more spacious than the previous model and when fully equipped, the passenger can enjoy toying around with the rear-seat entertainment system that will keep them occupied for the whole trip to the office and back to the fancy mansion. That's fancy living to you and that "out on the limo" feeling will leave them smug for the whole day. Lucky them. Also, the boot space wasn't half bad for a luxury car.

2021 Genesis G80

Now we get to the really important bits about the all-new Genesis G80. Starting on the choice of engines, the new G80 is powered by three all-new engines starting from the brand new turbocharged 2.5L engine producing 304PS of power and 43kg-m of torque, the brand new turbocharged 3.5L V6 engine producing 380PS of power and 54kg-m of torque, and the new 2.2L diesel engine producing 210PS of power and 45kg-m of torque. All are mated to an 8-speed automatic. I was gonna say the diesel variant is the one to avoid due to you-know-what but since this is South Korea, who cares.

Aside from the performance, the new G80 now behaves like a real premium sedan because it now utilizes a new platform made exclusively for Genesis as well as the extensive use of aluminum to save weight, resulting in better performance and fuel economy. When you take this one for a spin, the new G80's relatively superior dynamics really puts the German imports on notice because this one is a good laugh.

Good laugh aside, the new G80 is serious about safety and with that, it offers a greatly expanded and revised list of safety features such as Highway Driving Assist II, Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning, Pre-active Safety Seat, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist. It even comes with the Remote Smart Parking Assistant that allows the car to automatically park itself at the push of the button.

And there you have it. The new G80 not only marks the evolution of their first rear-wheel-drive saloon but it starts the revolution of the Genesis brand. With new and exciting features in store for Korea's 5-Series eater, there's no denying that we are getting jealous about owning one someday.

Genesis GV80

Since its 2015 launch, the Genesis brand has spawned three luxury sedans; the flagship G90, the middle child G80, and the junior class G70, and these three saloons are the rising stars of the luxury car market dominated by the Germans. With these three rising stars busy honing themselves on the road, the time is just right for Genesis to unveil their first-ever SUV, the GV80.

2021 Genesis GV80

The GV80, priced at 65,800,000 Korean Won, is the first SUV from Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai, and it's a bold take on the ever-popular German luxury crossovers of its size such as the BMW X5, the Audi Q7, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE. Whether you like it or not, the GV80 is all about utility and ruggedness while retaining the driving character of what makes a Genesis.

2021 Genesis GV80
First off, let's observe the design although the side view is downright impressive to look at, there's something unsure about the front and rear because according to them, the hexagonal-shaped grille and the split lamps are heavily inspired by the Genesis logo and looks like they do have a point. They did this once on the G90 flagship saloon and we can expect more to come wearing the Genesis design language someday.

2021 Genesis GV80 interior

Questionable looks aside, the GV80's interior blends the perfect balance of tech, convenience, and comfort, a common feat for luxury crossovers. On the driver's side, it still has the odd-looking steering wheel like you'd expect from the G70 but with the interest of tech, the GV80 nicks all of the familiar tech stuff you get from the opposition, meaning it works like every luxury crossover you're familiar with. Strange but not bad.

On the comfort side, the GV80 can be a five-seater or a seven-seater, depending on how you use it, and when hitting its sweet spot, you're in for an out-on-a-limo feeling because it's about as comfortable as a fancy apartment wealthy Koreans live in and it's all thanks to the world's first Road Active Noise Cancellation which sharply drops road noise while driving.

It's a poor man's Cullinan for all the right and wrong barrels and space-wise, the GV80 offers a good boot space for just about everything.

2021 Genesis GV80

The GV80 is powered by the same 3.0L diesel engine as the Kia Mohave but it produces 278PS of power and 60kg-m of torque and it is mated to an 8-speed AT. On its five-seater guise, it returns with a combined fuel economy of 11.8km/L.

Despite being an SUV, the GV80 is rear-wheel drive as standard and before you have second thoughts, it's too bulky and too social to poke its back end like most rear-wheel drive crossovers, but for the sake of intelligence, it comes with the electronically controlled suspension with road preview, which allows the GV80 to recognize road conditions via the front camera.

To get the most out of the GV80, there's an optional all-wheel drive system that works on all road conditions; be it tarmac, gravel, or snow, and it's good off-road as well but not quite as good as a Range Rover.

The GV80 ups the technology ante with a wide range of safety features and it is the first production car in the world to apply new safety features such as Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning, Highway Driving Assist II, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Driver Attention Alert Warning. Stuff like these results in being the most intelligent luxury car ever made for the most intelligent people who know how to drive one.

The Genesis luxury brand really started the year 2020 with its first-ever SUV, the GV80, and despite its questionable looks and the diesel engine, the premium sedan riding comfort, near good capability on and off the road, and tech really results to be the most intelligent car ever built and it's hard to put an argument with it.
